Bunion surgery - much more painful than I ever imagined

Posted , 157 users are following.

Had Scarf osteotomy to remove bunion on right foot on Friday 2 March. Foot numb for almost 24 hours so not much pain until Saturday morning - then sheer agony! Ibuprofen & codeine alternated with paracetamol & codeine the most effective painkillers but you can only take so many in a day. Have stayed in bed as walking (on heel) has been almost impossible and stairs too terrifying; bathroom visits have been a source of dread as when I stand there is a surge of blood to the foot and it feels as though it might explode. Then for the next 10 minutes or so after returning to bed the pain and throbbing are intense. However, this is now easing a bit so hoping to be gradually more mobile. Any advice anybody?

Hi MaryGladys, my name is Erin and I have had my bunion surgery for a little over a day now and it hurts at a 10 on the pain scale. I found this forum because I was looking up how long the pain lasts and it will be a week for me I hope. I didn't have a scarfectomy but I two screws put into my foot because I'm 16 with a moderately severe hallux valgas or bunion. It's quite painful as I said and my foot feels like a lead weight and in the boot my big toe felt like it was shrieking from being raised up on a pillow for me to sleep. It's a very intense feeling and I never have felt this kind of aching and burning heavy pain before so I completely understand. It's only been one day and my antibiotics sort of help but pills are digested slowly in my stomach as they always have been in me so the meds I have to wait a while for them to kick in. And I can take one hydrocodone every four hours but it's the waiting for them to dissolve enough to relate the acetominophen into my foot

Hi I'm two weeks post op bunion surgery on my right foot.  I had pain the first 3 days which subsided and even though many people told me it was painful I usually have a high pain tolerance so I wasn't concerned when I was able to walk ever where with some discomfort.  Of course I was taking 500mg's of tylenol twice a day. I did where the boot crutch. Then I figured I didn't need the tylenol and so I stopped taking it. My doc told me I could take a shower and after that I felt terrible pain return twice as bad as just after surgery!  i was upset thinking i did some damage and now I'm in bed AGAIN with foot elevated and every little movement is excruciating.  Bathroom Privilges only but pain now starting to ease up as I rest.   My family thinks I'm faking they are reluctant to help me. I was doing so good now they're not convinced that I'm really suffering. Now I dont trust this foot. How will I know its ok to resmue gradual activity, with or without tylenol, I'm terrified to shower. When will I have full painless usage?

Hi. I'm new to this forum and this website. I have read many of your posts because I will have bunion surgery. I have a severe bunion on left foot and very bad one on right foot. I've been putting this off for years but now I can't walk without pain. My big toe is turned on its side and I am walking on a bone on the side of my toe. It is very painful!

Listening to your posts gives me hope I can get better. I haven't scheduled the surgery yet but I will in 2 or 3 weeks. ( we are in the process of moving so I have to wait till the move is over.)

I'm scared of the surgery. (But I am a veteran since I had pelvic surgery in 1992 and had my pelvis put back together with three pieces of metal and screws.it was successful but it took me two years to walk after that one.) the pelvic surgery is the only one I have had. Maybe this one will be easier but it seems very painful!

    any advice?

    Thank you

hi hello to you and anyone planning on having bunion surgery im almost 4 weeks post op now and like everyone else was very scared to have this op done specially  when everyone inc nurses i saw prior was saying your very brave to have booth feet done at once, that just made it even worse lol

but let me say id rather have this op than a filling or tooth extraction

and i really do mean that im the worse for pain but really nothing to worry about just make sure you have codine and paracetomol presciption not over counter ones just for the when the nerve block wears off and even after a couple of tabs  its  ok you get  shooting pains of course but not like you will come to tears about it , i think the worse bit of this is the 6 weeks in those horirible shoes and the toe splints you wear after stiches are out they tend to make joint swell and give more shooting pains and the jabs you give yourself for 7 days for blood clots now that was worse lol and that was painless lol.

ive heard loads of stories about how bad the the pain was and feeling like foot wanted to explode im  thinking really  did your surgeon know what he was doing maybe i was lucky enough to have a really good foot surgeon  he  told me it was a doodle in his own words and nothing to worry about and so true those words were.

anyone planing this sugery take my word for it really not that bad from a self confessed chicken if  i needed to have it done again i would without a blink a eye

so dont worry have it done take proper pain killers and you will be fine and you will be saying the same thing  as me,,, cant wait to lose those crap shoes you have to wear and show your feet off lol

all the best and dont panicsmile

Hello dear. If its better than tooth extraction then I'll be running to theatre cos I have done two major surgeries, hysterectomy and breast reduction, so I think this is going to be a walk in the park. Lol
    • Posted

I've not had ever of those ops

May have I'll have to book a moob reduction next if I don't start back in the gym soon lol

And I do own teeth just incase you think I've lost them all to lol

If you have had those two serious ops I'm sure you know all about post op pain

So I know you will cope well ,hey I had both feet done at the same time

it's not totally pain free but only the first nigh was a bit painful but that was only down to wrong tablets given once I got those it really was nothing to worry about, just keep taking them every 4 hours even if you feel ok

Your probably worrying reading these other post saying how much pain they have had but you will be ok I'm sure

If you got any questions please don't hesitate to ask me

As I've said it those horrible black heeled shoes you will have to wear for 6 weeks that's going be the mental pain lol

I came across this particular post before having my surgery and in a way it's been a really nice distraction for me. I find when I can't sleep due to pain or worries I would read a few posts off of this and it helped a lot. Today I am 21 days post op from a lapidus on left foot and have 6 screws and 1 plate and while every day is getting better the pain is still very intese. I am in a surgical boot and I hate the boot so so much. I had such a hard time beind my foot to 90degrees to fit in the boot and now that I have worked to get that flexibility back my foot is basically stuck pointing to the right foot in a relaxed position of sorts. I am wondering if the bottom of my foot is swollen or something because my big toe does not want to be flat with teh rest of my foot and it causes my foot to angle. When I put the boot on there is like a marble size bump feeling about half way on the bottom of my foot. Is this a screw or scar tissue or swelling? Does anyone have a similar experience and does anyone know if icing the bottom of the foot is okay and/or helpful? I am non weight bearing for 4 more weeks

It probably is swelling. In my experience, my sole was swollen to a rounded appearance and blue in the very middle. The swelling can cause your toes to stick up and look funny. Mine looked like short sausages stuck onto a balloon!! I did ice the bottom of my foot... but absolutely do not put weight on your foot until the Dr says you can. It can cause problems I didn't know about until later.

You hang in there and feel better soon!! 😃

I had bunion surgery 4 weeks ago and I wish someone, anyone woulda told me how it really is so im glad I found this site. I was discharged 3 hours after surgery and vomited from noon till 8pm non stop on top of the insane pain. Dont get me started on the cast he put on me 2 weeks after. I demanded it off 2 weeks in and am in the boot.

Hi. I'll be going for surgery next Monday the 22 February 2016 and I was scared until I read about your experiences and now I'm ready and not scared. Thank you

you will be fine but dont let  them just give you just parcetolmol to take home  because  once your home last thing you want is to wake up in the night in discomfort  but other than that dont worry you will be ok

ps  even if you feel ok dont walk about  thats the number one mistake just take it real easy for a couple of weeks

I'll do so my dear, thanks very much, will update you of my progress after surgery

Stay in bed... don't walk on foot or heel unless Dr says you can. This can slow down the proper healing and effect the new shape of you foot. This depends on the depth of surgery perfomed. Some only requiring the bunion to be shaved will not be as painful as one where bones are cut into, twisted, then plated and screwed back together.

Find some arts/crafts you can do in bed. Order a paint set, needle point sewing kit, books, etc. to entertain yourself in the bed.

This is a very serious surgery and your healing can affect you the rest of your life. For me, the knee walker was my get around life saver. It allowed me to get around the house, bathroom, kitchen, etc w/o depending on others or falling on crutches.

Just know this is a serious surgery likely to cause pain, so sit back, take deep relaxing breaths along with your meds, and try to bear it. You be much better very soon! Wishing you a very speedy recovery ... take care!!

Hello,  I see these are old threads -- but I'd love to receive an update from you and others.

I am 9 weeks post bunion surgery (lapidus bunionectomy, 2 screws -- to correct a severe 22 degree bunion) and I also had a metatarsyl osteotomy (shortening and mobilization) on my 2nd toe, also with two screws.  I currently feel the surgery was a mistake, unfortunately.

My toes and foot are stiff, painful, and normal walking seems like it won't happen again. I can't put the pressure to roll my foot/bend my toes in a regular walking motion. Swelling and throbbing is still severe.

I am fortunate that regular straight down weight bearing is not painful in the walking boot.

Any movement/self physical therapy as directed by my doctor/ I try to do causes pain so I'm reluctant to push it.  I am trying as much as possible though.  I also have numbness but that is the least of my worries right now.

Anyone with similar surgery and a more optomistic outcome?? I'd love to hear from you...hoping I'm just expecting too much too soon.

I'm 49, my right foot so have not been able to drive since surgery 1/6/16.

Thank you!  I hope you're doing great

Sorry for your trouble. I am not kidding when I say it seriously takes nine months to a year for a full recovery.

Don't give up. It will be all worth it in the end. My surgery was last May 29th and I am doing great. Back in Reg shoes and all is wonderful.

Don't over ice. Keep foot prompt up. It's so good, I'm ready to go have the other done.

      Best of luck to you!

Hello-I was glad to see your post as I just had my second bunion surgery on Friday March 4 2016. I'm not sure how different our surgerys were-but I had two Reverdin Green Bunionectomys. The bone was cut, repositioned and a screw inserted.   My first surgery was on January 13, 2016 and I felt really was not to bad. After my foot unthawed-about 16 hours later I was able to keep the pain under control and foot elevated and iced and aside from the pain of the blood rushing to my feet each time I had to get up and down I was able to get through it O.K.  This second surgery was so different. The nerve block only lasted a short time. I kept my foot elevated and iced non stop but the pain was unrelentless. I couldn't get the pain to subside at all....the throbbing was intense and the pain meds weren't touching it. I was tempted to call my doctor but it was over the weekend and I really didn't want to bother him....had it been a weekday I would have. Finally Sunday evening-the 3rd day after my surgery, the throbbing started to subside a bit. Monday morning I had my post-op appointment-I actually wanted to cancel as I couldn't hardly navigate my foot without so much pain-but decided to go in case something may have been wrong.  The doctor said everything looked fine and said that every surgery is different and it is just the experience. He said if the pain continued that way to call his office in a couple days.  Well it is now Wednesday (03/09/16) and I can tell you it is 100 times better! Sure it still throbs when I get up and all the blood runs to my feet-but only for a short time. Moving my big toe is very painful-I know I need to keep moving it but it is not fun. I also worry about the future of my feet....my first bunion that I had surgery on is still numb and my foot still so swollen....the doctor said it is normal for the foot to be swollen-it will go on for a long time apparently. Actually looking at my foot- the bunion still looks like it is there.....I am feeling at times that I am not so sure I

sorry - hit the wrong key and couldn't finish my post. I was saying I am not so sure I would do it all over again...but it has not been that long yet and I need to give it time.  I hope you are doing better...it sounds like your surgery was much more involved than mine-especially your second toe. I need to have my toe done as well-but am not going back for another procedure. Good luck to you-please let me know how you are doing.

Wow, I hope you heal quickly. At this point I can say I would not do it over again.  I hope that changes.

My first night after surgery was brutal with the pain -- I thought something was wrong so I DID place that 4:30 a.m. call to my doctor and found out that I could relieve pressure in my foot by loosening the ace bandage around the cast where it was bi-valved (cut) and take more than double the pain meds she prescribed.  That got me through three days pretty good but like you I hated to go back for my first visit.

I had some cast change problems but then adjusted to my two week appointments and cast changes.

My current issues are that I expected to be in a better place by now. The swelling is awful, the throbbing very upsetting but most of all the lack of ability to feel like I can walk normal again is so depressing.  I'm okay in the surgical 'ski' boot (with weight but the foot and ankle doesn't move) but I have no luck with a sneaker or other surgical shoe. I just wind up limping. The areas of the surgeries are very stiff and painful to move.

Perhaps just need to be more patient but right now it feels it has not improved at all over the last couple of weeks. Sounds like progress will be slow and much, much longer than I anticipated.  My doctor has said same as yours that every surgery and recovery is different.

I'll check back here in a while to let you know how it's going.

I'm now going to have to accept that 6 months to a year for 'full' recovery is probably to be expected.  I just HOPE for full recovery. Very depressing. Oh, and right now I still can't drive...fun times.

I feel so much the same as you. Yesterday I ended up going to have the doctor look at my foot as the incision started to bleed the 6th day after surgery. I had been on my feet for a little too long and had taken a walk outside....I know I probably overdid it but was also a little alarmed by the fresh blood. Also the pain is there even at night. The doctor looked it over and said it is a little infected and put me on an antibiotic. I remember my first surgery the area was a little red but didn't really seem to be painful or bleed. Anyway-I am starting antibiotics today and trying to not go anywhere as the boot seems to irritate-just the rubbing on the incision and the heaviness of the boot as well.

I agree with you-perhaps we need to be more patient...but it is such a long process and the not being able to drive part is hard. I know I am worried about beiing able to wear any other shoes at this point. I will be wearing 2 surgical boots for quite awhile I'm afraid.

I am grateful for your feedback-nice to know someone who is going through some of the same issues!

I am7 weeks post op, and can finally drive and wear a shoe. I still have a lot of paon, and have to wear a bigger shoe than I originally was thinking. I'm so impatient. And very hesitant to get other one done.

    • Posted

I also overdid by driving a few weeks earlier than allowed. I really had no choice as have 3 young children and no one to drive us around. The doctor is concerned I messed it up a little by rushing the healing process. My advice to anyone feeling impatient is to try and hang in there. I'm so ready for the pain to be over with!
