Bunion surgery - much more painful than I ever imagined

Had Scarf osteotomy to remove bunion on right foot on Friday 2 March. Foot numb for almost 24 hours so not much pain until Saturday morning - then sheer agony! Ibuprofen & codeine alternated with paracetamol & codeine the most effective painkillers but you can only take so many in a day. Have stayed in bed as walking (on heel) has been almost impossible and stairs too terrifying; bathroom visits have been a source of dread as when I stand there is a surge of blood to the foot and it feels as though it might explode. Then for the next 10 minutes or so after returning to bed the pain and throbbing are intense. However, this is now easing a bit so hoping to be gradually more mobile. Any advice anybody?

    Good morning everyone,

I had my bunion surgery on Monday (12/18/17). My doctor has performed other surgeries for members of our, most recently my daughter.   I can’t say I am under extreme pain, but definitely I have moments between a 7 and 10 (10 being the highest). I am taking Percocet every 5 to 6 hours and keeping my foot up; constantly icing the foot, which helps relief the pain.  I am not wearing a cast but a walking boot.  Right now, the biggest discomfort is went I put my foot down and I feel the throbbing pain as the blood flow to my foot.   With all that being said, I am hoping to be back at work on the 8th. I work in an office, so I will be sitting down.  Based on your experiences, do you think this feasible.?

I am 61, just had bunion surgery 2months ago. Im in physical therapy 2xs a week for 3weeks which I hate, but other than that my surgery was pretty good. I have no pain throughout except for little shooting onez from time to time. I believe thats the nerves trying to heal. I still elevate & ice 3xs a day & have followed advice from doctor to a T.

And in 4 to 6 months doing it again on left foot.

Hi everybody   I had foot surgery four days ago. My foot was really a mess and they had to break it in three different places, put pins in it,and shave the bone to fix it. They now have a new product out now that is a nerve blocker. It is called an auto fuser.  My foot was really a mess and they had to break it in three different places, put pins in it , and break my big toe and shave the bone to fix it. They have a relatively new product out now that is a nerve blocker. It is called an auto fuser. They  insert a tiny tiny fusion line in your leg and from the knee down it totally blocks any sensation while you get over the worst part. You can self monitor and turn it up or down according to your pain level. I turned it down some and started to feel that aching and throbbing on the inside ankle so I went ahead and turned it back up. I am  on the phone now with my provider to try to get a refill for another for five days then I think the pain will be more manageable. It is so so much better than putting narcotics in your body and feeling lightheaded all the time. Highly highly recommend!!!!   My pain level since the time I woke up from surgery has been zero .
