Bunion surgery nightmare!

Posted , 6 users are following.

hi i am a month post op from bunion surgery, correction of bone deformity of my big toe with screws.

This is not my first surgery, i have had two previous for taylor bunions of the little toes. These operations have left me with one little toe that does not move and has no movement whatsoever, and the other no feeling but excruciating pain, and it doesnt touch the floor.

Now this operation, has left me with: a big toe that has no movement, does not touch the floor whatsoever, has completly bent over the other toes which has returned as worse than before the operation. I cannot walk properly at all im a crippled in pain, i can only wear flip flops, ive been off work for so long and am worried this isnt getting any better. my surgeon wont see me for another month, and im just fed up i want my foot fixed and am contemplating getting a orthopedic surgeon to fix my foot as im only 22 years old crippled in agony !

any advice as to what to do , and just to mention this was done on nhs, but am seriously thinking to filing a serious complaint as now my whole life has changed.

I would first see your GP , they may say its early days and to wait for time to pass in order to see improvement. Ask for a referral to an ortho and stand your ground ( pardon the pun)

Re movement I had same op five weeks ago and only now beginning to get minor movement back , not helped by having no instructions on how to move it or physio.Big toe does touch ground second toe with pin doesn't am hoping this will once pin out !

Are you still non weight bearing ?

Hi louise, yeah im on weight bearing, its not that its just this is the third op and the last two have gone horribly wrong aswell, i was giving this the benefit of the doubt!

I have no feeling or movemwnt whatsoever in the big toe and its solid and stuck at the angle its at now, even if i try forcing it its not budging?

I am going to get a referal for orthopedics to look at it as i cant work atm because my job is on my feet 12 hours a day coaching football!

You need to go back to gp and basically refuse to budge alternatively you could pay £150 to see a private ortho in your local area then get gp to refer to same person on the NHS.

Is it the same podiatrist who has done all procedures ?

See what ortho says and then perhaps write a complaint through PALS service all nhs services in UK will have one.

      All the best,

      Louise

Hi Laura-Mary. I suggest you see your GP and ask for a second opinion. They may well ask you to wait but like the other feedback I would agree make a stand. At your age you needed a good recovery you have so many years of your life ahead of you. Have you got hyper mobility if your toes bend to that degree.  I suggest you ask for physio, but you could also pay to see a good podiatrist privately for some advice and guidance.  Good luck.

YEah im going to get a referall for an orthopedic surgeon to look at it, yes my other foot i can bend my toe all the back..  but this toe i cannot even twitch my big toe, and when i try moving it by my hands its solid and doesnt move an inch.

I ditto the recommendations to get a second opinion.  Do you have the details of what procedure was done?

Laura-Mary, I am so sorry to hear of your pain and several operations. I'd definitely complain, and if you can afford a surgeon then that would be the quickest way around this ordeal. But Ortho-surgeons are expensive even to the most who can afford it. I know I couldn't. It doesn't seem natural what you have gone through and to have the big toe worse than it was before seems very wrong. I know my surgeon said I won't get the 'feeling' back into my toes but they at least are straight. I wish you all the best and don't leave it too long as you won't be able to work at all if you can't get more time off now.

    Dear Laura-Mary,

I am sorry to hear about your experience re surgery to your feet. I agree with the other contributors: you should get a second opinion. X-rays would reveal what the problem is, i.e. what has actually been done to your feet and why they are like they are.

    All the best.
