Buprenorphine Constipation

Does anyone else experience severe constipation while on buprenorphine? (8mg for pain)

How do I correct it? I drink plenty of water and eat enough fibre. I only have a bowel movement every couple of days and it's exceptionally painful.

Even we discontinue use for a few days the constipation remains, only if I stop taking for a week or so do I feel normal.

It really is a lamentable side affect.

Hello Ozram. Unfortunately it's a side effect of most opiates. I take codeine and get very constipated. I've started taking Dulcoease that softens the stools. You can buy it at any chemist and some supermarkets sell it. Prunes are also very good or just buy prune juice.

I tried so many things for the constipation, but I finally found something that works well for me--taking 400-800 mg of magnesium.  It is also a good muscle relaxant and helps with some of my pain too! Good luck.

Some foods in themselves don't help with constipation. Matron and foxyloxy5 make very good points. Also if you are under a pain management team the could be alternatives. I am looking at possible injection in my spine
