I'm experiencing a burning mouth which includes tongue, palate and throat.  Also having a lot of gland pain.  Any suggestions on what to do to ease these complaints.  Thanks

I had several dentists and other oral doctors try to tell me I had burning mouth syndrome when I tried to explain that my tongue burnt when I ate. After years of dealing with it and not being able to eat much of anything with comfort I finally found an oral surgeon who submitted a sample from a biopsy and asked them lab to look for a fungal infection. Lo and behold I had candida aka thrush. Once I was treated for thrush and the fungal infection disappeared I was almost back to my original self. And eating was again pleasurable. Since that time and I will say it's only been about a year, I have been plagued with thrush symptoms on again off again but mostly on again. That was until I met with an ENT who put me on a small daily dose of an antifungal medicine and that keeps the thrush from populating in my mouth. If you have a dry mouth like you would with Sjogren's your mouth will not show the typical white splotches that they look for. And really the only way you can tell it's thrush is by the way it feels. My oral surgeon only did the biopsy because I had a sore on my tongue that wasn't healing and we needed to have it biopsied and checked for cancer. I fortunately did not have cancer but he also asked the lab to test for any fungal infections and that diagnosis changed my life. So that could be your problem. But if you do have burning mouth syndrome there is really nothing you can do about it except to grin and bear it. (pun intended) A lot of people with burning mouth syndrome remark that it feels better when they are eating and the reason for this is because eating causes your mouth to produce saliva which for some reason makes it all feel better. But the relief stops as soon as you stop eating. So I think you have to ask yourself which group do you fall in?

I have burning mouth but I also have dry mouth and sometimes my mouth gets a film in it like slime really thick so I drink a lot of water or tea. I cannot drink soda because it burns, brushing my teeth burns and I need to brush several times a days because my teeth feel yucky. I used to eat habanero sauce in my food but now even pepper burns. I feel your pain. I used to have a sore on my tongue and I get sores in my mouth like canker sores and it takes forever for them to heal.

I am definitely no doctor but everything you just described sounds exactly like my symptoms were when I was forced to suffer with thrush because the doctors and dentist insisted that I had burning mouth syndrome. Things like vinegar as in salad dressing and mint as in toothpaste all burn my tongue terribly. I don't think you have burning mouth syndrome. From your description I really think you have a thrush problem and it just doesn't show on the surface. Do some research on the Sjogren's syndrome Foundation website. That's where I found out you don't necessarily break out in white splotches in your mouth when you have thrush. This is especially true in a very dry mouth. And honestly what's the harm in being treated for thrush to see if it helps. I don't know if you live in the US but I was sick of my tongue burning every time I brush my teeth. So I found a toothpaste at a health food store that does not burn my tongue.

Thank you so much for your reply.   My burning comes and goes.  Sometimes everything is burning, tongue, palate and throat, sometimes it could just be the tongue or palate and sometimes everything is ok.  Do you think thrush symptoms can come an go? My tongue sometimes has a white coating. Would thrush contribute to bad breath?  I will definitely explore this with my doctor. Thanks so much for your response.

Dear Venita, I also have BMS , Sjogrens, and Hasimoto's Thyroiditis. You should not drink soda because dry mouth can cause cavities. Also, make sure that you do not brush your teeth until one hour after eating anything acidic or you will wear the enamel away. You can rinse your mouth and use a water pic. I have a well so there isn't fluroide in my water. I get the fluroide without alcohol. I too get a sore on the tip of my tongue from thrusting my tongue into my teeth as my mouth doesn't feel like it belongs to me anymore. Your doctor can prescribe "magic mouthwash"; mine is Lidocaine/Rulox/Banophen. It only slightly numbs my lip and tongue. I too feel my saliva is so thick and sticky and everything sticks to my teeth so I have a difficult time eating and lost my appetite. Ora Gel helps a tiny bit to numb the sores that feel like canker sores. Blessings, donna

i wish i could tell you something amazing that will make this stop but i am dealing with the same problem as you. i can say that i've found some relief by sucking on a popsicle. i have an app. with a dental surgeon on the 18th of this month for a wisdom tooth, and i intend on asking him some questions then. my reg. dentist doesn't seem worried about it and an ent i went to blames it on sleep apnea. if they knew how miserable this is they might take it more serious.

Alice I'm guessing you're fairly Young. I've read more and more people who are young it terrible treatment from Dr because I guess doctor seem to have it in their head if you're young you can't be sick. So I hope you find a doctor that works for you.

Unfortunately most doctors treat young people as if they never get sick. Your tongue can have a white coating and that can be considered a sign of thrush. Or what the doctor could consider doing a tree is treating your thrush just to see if it got better. Unless you have some allergic reaction I see no reason why you can't just try it once to confirm the presence of a fungal infection.

I find chewing flavoured gum (apart from peppermint flavoured )  , stops it for a while and constant sips of water. When I am asleep it seems to be fine (I don't wake up with burning tongue) TBH I haven't mentioned it to a rheumatologist, or the gastroenterologist (I have GERD plus other digestive issues) or the dentist or ENT (in fact only hubby knows about it ...when I complain sometimes :0

Hi Betty, I too have burning mouth syndrome which affects my lower lip and frequently my tongue. There is Magic mouthwash which a doctor can prescribe to help numb the pain. Mine consists of Lidocain/Rulox/Banophen. My dermatologist said if it doesn't help she could always "tweak" it. I had a nerve block done once by an ENT, but that made it so difficult even talk. I don't have gland pain. My lips are so dried out and nothing seems to help. I drink so much water and am constantly running to the washroom. Blessings, donna
