Burning rash that happens every night?

Something odd has been happening for some time now, almost every night, just before I go to bed which is late, about 11 pm, I start getting this weird burning sensation like a rash on my hands, they get red and very itchy and feel hot.

It usually happens on the outer part of each hand, from my ring finger part of the palm to my wrist, front and back. It affects both hands at the same time and with the same intensity, it sometimes feels as well near the inner part of my elbows.

The whole thing lasts about half an hour and then it goes away on its own. This has been happening for many months, but before it was maybe one a week or so, now it happens almost every night.

I have paid attention to what I put on my hands like soap and lotion, and stuff I eat but I've found no relation so far, I've thought it may be due to stress/anxiety but still don't understand the timely episodes.

I have also not been on any medications during this time, so not sure if it could be an allergic reaction.

What do you think may be causing this, and how may I avoid it?

Hi Worried Sick - are you sure its a rash or rather a sensation, like almost a sunburn without redness or not hot to the touch - if its like a sunburn i have suffered with it for 2 years - only i primarily get it on my back, chest, forearms & front of my calves & it always comes on for me during the night - its either hormone or anxiety related & its disturbing but harmless & dont bother asking your dr about it because they dont know -

Hi Debra, thank you for your answer. It is both, I feel my skin burn but I also see it become quite red, like if I had had a very hot shower or worse. I also do think it's because of my anxiety but I feel that alone doesn't quite explain why it happens only at night or why it comes and goes by itself like that. Although I am a very anxious person I don't feel my anxiety getting worse as my hands itch, and I don't suddenly feel relaxed when they go back to normal either. I haven't talked to any doctor about it yet, mainly because I know they're gonna say to just watch what I touch or consume in case it's an allergy but I know that's not the case.

What do you do before you get this burning sensation. Do you have a routine? Do you have any rings that are new? Or a new bubble bath or shower gel? Or maybe a new pet that you have on your knee before going to bed? It could even be from a fabric of clothing or new bed linen. Do you do a bit of cleaning in the evening before bed? I usually clean up my kitchen and some cleaning products have a lot of things you could be allergic to in them. I always have to check the labels of mine to see they don't have certain preservatives in.

When you get this rash, have you tried taking an antihistamine? Bedtime is the best time to take them as they can make you drowsy, but if you do take them try not to drink any alcohol that night before.

Stress and anxiety can certainly cause a feeling like that. Do you start to think of the next days problems before you go to bed? Maybe a job that stresses you? Making decisions? Coping with work colleagues? Driving to work?. do you wish you could offload your problems by talking?

Do you have any exercise regime? Regular exercise can help to get rid of stress , likewise joining a yoga group could be useful.
