Burning sensation at the Base of big toe a week after scarf osteotomy

Hi. I had a scarf osteotomy 1 week 2 days ago. Last night I couldn't get to sleep because my big toe felt like it was on fire. It was at the bottom of my big toe on the top of my foot. Not even ibuprofen helped. I'm hoping this is normal healing?? Did anyone else experience this. I'm fed up of that pain and don't know how long it will be before it starts to subside ??. Thanks in advance

Hi Gillian I had same op 15 weeks ago, got to say I didn't experience this. As you know every procedure/ patient experience differs. I would check if toe feels warm, looks red? if discomfort does not subside I would ring the hospital/clinic especially before the weekend. Hope this helps and that the disomfort subsides.

Hi.
My toes seems fine. I keep feeling them to make sure they are any different. I've heard from some others that they got this too so it's good to know I'm not alone. Apparently it's the nerves knitting together.
I have my appt for stitches removal in a few days so hoping to ask some questions ms send hopefully reassurance!
How are your feet now. Did you get both done? Was it minimally invasive? I had MIS chevron scarf oesteotomy

I has just my left foot bunion and 2nd toe-hammer straightened and k-wire in place. To be honest my recovery is taking much longer than I had expected. I had K-wire to support hamer toe in place for almost 9 week! I was only able to walk flat footed with ths wire in from 2 weeks post op. I feel this delayed my recovery, consequently I have paid for a private physio as my podiatrist informed me he would review my limited flexibility for 3 months, however after 14 weeks off work I return next week. If not for the pain of the hammer toe I would not have required the surgery I feel. If I had only required the bunion to be 'done' I would have been back at work by 8 weeks! My foot looks great, with expected swelling t looks normal! This web site has been amazing, I had become a fully flrdged foot bore!!

Yeah thank god for this website it's brilliant! Has kept me busy and mind off my burning too as you do get quite a few replies.
Your surgery was more difficult than mine by the sounds of it
Will you be getting the right side done or us that foot OK?

Hi,
I had bunion surgery on my right foot last Friday June 17th. I have a pin and screw in my foot. The screw will stay of course but pin will dissolve. I never believed it would be this painfull. The first 4 days were the worse. Going to the bathroom, all the blood would just run to your foot then when I had to use my health to step up in my bathroom I cried, it hurt that bad. I took meds every 4 hours for 2 days cause the pain was horrible. Now I'm a week in and I get different pains like sharp shooting pains come and go. Sometimes they make me jump they hurt! Also the burning you have, I have it to. I have the bottom, top where the stitches are and across the foot. I have it right now and can't sleep. I was trying not to take anymore pain pills however, I can't sleep it's so annoying. I also have a big boot and it's heavy. I have to wear this all the time. The only time I take it off is when I change clothes after showering. I'm getting so tired of staying home, not leaving the house... ugh. I am very active and hardly never sit down, so this is super hard for me. I just want to be able to sleep at night, I sleep in a recliner with foot up with 2 pillows.

Hi Diane.
Did you have minimally invasive? I did and hardly got any pain at all. I was taking tablets but didn't really need them. I took them as precaution. I had no pain for about 20 hours as I'd had a nerve block in my ankle.
The worst part for me was day 3 as I must have had swelling as my bandage became very tight under my little toe! It was relentless horrible pain. I cried a few times. I thought typical. I have bunion surgery and the only pain I get is from my bandage being too tight on the other side of my foot.
Then one night I got this awful burning pain at the Base of my big toe. It wouldn't stop. I'd had that pain on and off but it last constantly for hours . I couldn't sleep. It's awful as the pain always seems worse at night doesn't it.
That boot well I've not worn it since day 3!! I thought well I'm pretty sure it's just protection and it was driving me mad. So I've not worn it. I don't heel walk yet. I had mine done 2 days before you on the Wednesday. I've tried heel walking but it was just too painful. I'm waiting until I get another crutch to restart trying. I've only had one crutch you see and I need to put most of my weight on my arms. I'm dreading trying again.
Have you managed any heel walking?
I know how you feel. I'm a bit depressed today. My house looked messy this morning. I have 3 kids and they are mess monsters. I decided to clean the kitchen and wash the floor. I even hoovered downstairs.....on my bum!!! It's amazing how you can do things when youre in the is position!!! I even cleaned my bathroom too. Slithering round like a snake.
I slept downstairs for first week on the sofa with foot on cushion. I'm not sleeping in the Bed.
I hope your pain subsides. I've not had any burning at all today and I did all that housework unless it's coming later. I had that burning feeling all day yesterday but it was on and off so wasn't too bad.
I have to drive to My hospital appt a day under my 2 weeks of getting it done! I have an auto so don't need my left foot other than for the handbrake cable which I can slide my right foot over to do. Not ideal but I have no other option!! ?? it's the rigmarole of getting out the house and into car then out the car in hospital and to the department and back in car. Oh my.
Let's just think it will be worth it in the end.
Will you be getting your left foot done??

Hi, I had Bunionectomy w/Osteotomy on my right foot. I have a screw and pin. Im not sure if I'm gonna do left foot or not. It depends on the way I do with this foot first... lol right now from moving my toe up and down like the doctor told me to do I'm in pain. I have to do it though so it doesn't stay stiff. I am practicing with walking in my boot from my heel to the toe. I'm so scared I'm gonna hurt it though. I have not did anything cause the doctor said the more you do now, I will be regretting it later because the healing process will take longer and my foot will swell alot. So I'm listening to him and taking it easy. It's very hard for me because I'm active and do not like sitting still at all.
I hope everything works out for you..
Keep me posted as I will.you...

Hi. Is a bunion to my where they shave the side of your bunion off. I'm only familiar with oesteotomy.
I know a couple of screws were mentioned that I'd have .
I've not been told to wiggle my toe at all. Wow I wouldn't dare even if I was told too ??. I'm so scared like you of damaging it.
I had a nap this afternoon and I dreamt my bandage come off and my bunion was still there OMG it woke me up. I was terrified lol.
I'm like you. Very active. This is so strange me sitting around all day . I refuse to sit around. I'm always too busy. So now I'm feeling a bit down and feel tired all the time. The less you do the less you want to do I suppose.
Have you had any appointments with your surgeon since your surgery? I don't get my appt until a day before 2 weeks to have stitches removed and a splint putting on. I can barely wait!
Yes. Stay in touch. Let me know how things are getting on with you.

It's difficult to know what you can and can't do compared to what you can and should do!
