Burning sensation in feet and legs keeping me awake

Posted , 6 users are following.

have any other Hippys experienced the feeling that their limbs and especially the feet are on fire?  I have had a really restless night with this. it doesn't happen during the day.  My feet and hands are usually cold whatever the weather.   I am due to have THR later in the year and I wonder if this will disappear after the op or is it an altogether different problem, say as a result of arthritis or ageing?

Hello Jennifer.  I had similar symptoms way before my hip issues and blood test revealed an underactive thyroid.  Unfortuantely underactive thyroid can be difficult to diagnose in the early stages.  The blood test is a TSH.  Here in the UK the labs are happy if the count is 5 - 5.5 and class this as normal.  In Germany and the States they class 3.5 as normal.  Fortunately for me my GP took all other symptoms into consideration plus the inherited condition and treated me at 5.8.  Some GP's in Uk may wait till count is about 10.  My count now is 3 and I feel warm all the time, have energy and no longer crave carbs.  I used sleep every afternoon even though at the time i was only in my 40's. I do sleep now in the afternoons since having my hip at 66 but this is getting better at week 8.  Worth googling the symptoms anyway.  Sadly the symptoms are not the same for everyone which is why it is dificult to get the diagnosis but in my case 3 female family members have the condition

Of course it may be anything that is troubling you and best to get it checked out

My hip doing well and now at week 8 feel great, a little tired at times but walking normally and last night for the first time since 2011 I slept for 8 hours.  Did my first trip to the supermarket this morning at 8am.  Been online shopping for the past year or so.

    Keep in touch

Thank you Ann, helpful as ever!  I have battled with my weight for years now and I asked my GP about under active thyroid.  I had the test and he said I was 'border line' so no drugs.  Someone at my Slimming World meeting suggested kelp, which I have been taking for about four years now.  Don't know if it has made any difference as I still battle to loose every ounce.  I feel cold all the time and I crave carbs so perhaps now is the time to raise the issue with my GP once again.  So glad you continue to make good progress. Thank you once again.

Hello again Jennifer. I was borderline according to the "norm" my GP asked me to keep a temp chart for two weeks. Had to take temperature on waking before I got out of bed. The results made him decide to treat me. My temp was only 34.5 which is why getting going was difficult and why I was sleeping in the afternoon. I have no half moons on finger nails and texture of hair had changed. Because of under active thyroid I had early menopause and developed osteoporosis. Glad I have a great GP

I have this problem and have had it for years. I don't think it's anything to do with needing the op, and as far as I am concerned it hasn't improved. If you google burning sensation in the feet, it comes up with all sorts of reasons and cures for it. What I found after years of it was that my thyroid gland was under active , and I am now on thyroxine for that. However I still think it's border line as I still get the burning feeling sometimes. I an 4 weeks post op, and am going to research natural methods of boosting my thyroid, to see if I can improve it stil more. Are you Diabetic by any chance as that can be another cause, and something I found helped here was cutting back on all carbohydrates, it's the only way that ever works for me when I want to lose weight, which is another constant battle!!

hope this helps in some way

Thank you Margaret.  I was tested and diagnosed as 'borderline' under active thyroid and was advised to take sea kelp (Holland and Barrett) but I'm not sure that it has made any difference to my thyroid.  Time to see the doctor again I think.  It's bad enough being woken by the hip/knee hurting but this burning sensation is a nightmare.  I had a test at our local hospital for diabetes earlier this year as my Mum had it but tests came back negative, happy with that of course.  I'm doing the 5.2 diet at the moment and although the low calorie days are purgatory it is working for me.  I am determined to loose weight before my op later this year.  My husband has been doing this diet with me and has lost 4 inches from around his waist!  Who said life was fair?

      GREETINGS FROM ACROSS THE POND

I have had extremely hard time losing weight.

I have low thyroid too. Found out by the wt.loss doctor, to take the thyroid meds at least one hour before eating breakfast.and three hours if I'm eating anything with soy products in it. Because soy breaks down the thyroid medication do it is not efficient in helping the thyroid function better.I'm on low call diet called simple 2loose it uses medifast products which contain soy.So the doctor said when I get up at night to take it then.and you know what I have started to loose wt.again.9 pounds in last six weeks.

I'm very close to my goal so then wt.loss is harder to do.However since Nov.22 -2014 I have lost 36 pounds and 20"over all my body.

I had been on a plateau for two yrs.I'm very happy.best to you.

Hi Jennifer, I had a THR in April & after my op your symptoms sound the same as what I have had. Every night I was awake for a few hours.

I have been put on Gabapentin. You start off on a loading dose of 300 mg a day then it can be increased up to 1800 mg in a day to suit your pain level. It has helped me.

Hope me this info helps you x

Thank you Gaynor.  I think a visit to the doctor is the starting point.  Hope you are pleased with your THP.  Most of the contributors to this forum seem to be.  Must admit I don't read the ones who have had problems.  I'm worried enough as it is!

It is difficult as we are all different, if honest it's been harder than I thought but only because of the pain at night and lack of sleep through it. I practised sleeping on my back lying flat and sitting up so it didn't come as a shock,

I usually lie on my tummy to sleep.  I am looking forward to being able to sleep in comfort.

The one thing I do is I get up once I get the pain as I have learnt lying there it doesn't go away, so tend to come downstairs make a drink then go back to bed when ready and I then am able to sleep.

The one thing I am really looking forward to is a bath, think I will lock myself away and indulge in a very long bubble bath when I am given the go ahead. It's the little things in life I have missed.

My Gp was very helpful as it's very hard to explain what the feeling/pain etc was like as everyone expects the pain to come in your hip but I have experienced no pain occasional tenderness but I expected that.

Let eat me know how you get on

      Take care

      Gaynor xx

Hi Gaynor, how kind of you to ask about my poor old feet!  At the moment I am enjoying a weeks holiday in Italy.  I haven't been able to do as much walking as I would like, especially today as we were at Pompeii - uneven paths, stones and many steps.  But at night I've been fine.  I will go and see my GP when I get home, I will also be asking the hospital for an estimate of when I may expect to be called for my pre op.  Will let you know, take care.
