Bursa in heel, burst. How long to heal.

My daughter aged 13. A week ago jumped into a swimming pool at the shallow end and hurt her heel, I put it down to bruising after 2 days swelling continued, so took her to our local A&E, x ray's show no break, doc was a little surprised as her pain levels and swelling were presenting that way, after a quick examination burst bursa, painkillers nurofen within a few days she should be able to weight bear and swelling and pain should lesson. Considering she could put no weight on her heel she was given no crutches to help mobility. Now it's a week later her pain levels are still high no change the swelling is not reducing I have been measuring ankle area and it's actually slightly increased.

Does anyone have any experience of this type of injury as she really is now very miserable and bored. I can't send her to school as she can barely walk around the house so is spending all her time on the sofa with her foot elevated. And as a normally very active teenager I really feel for her, I have thought about she maybe putting it all on a bit and I can tell by her facial expressions and her eyes the pain is very real.

Im caught between taking her back to a different a & e for a second opinion or whether is normal for this sort of injury.

Thank you for any advice in advance

No personal of family experience here, but as a parent of a 13 year old daughter (who sounds a lot like yours... super active and mine is a bit accident prone on top of that... we're now seeing the same PT wink ), I'd recommend taking her back and asking for a referral to a specialist.

I was able to locate some information on the Health Tap website (look for "Bursa Sac Ankle" and you'll find a bunch of info from doctors on there). This is what one of them said: "In brief: Rehab vs. surgery. Best case- 3-4 days of of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) Then 1-2 weeks of rehab. Worse case -surgical excision of the bursal sac."

Sounds like you have past the 3-4 days and given the lack of improvement (and lack of any PT set up for her) I'd go back for that 2nd opinion.

So sorry to hear about your daughters injury.  I certainly understand that she would be bored and therefore miserable.  She is still swollen and in pain and it's been longer than the doc said it would be.............so I would have her checked out again and to learn why this has happened.  She is young and should heal quicker than you would.  What's up??  I would also have her get crutches or a knee scooter so that she can go to school and be with friends while she is healing.  Good luck
