Burstvear drum and ear infection - will I be able to go on holiday?

Posted , 2 users are following.

Hi everyone.

Last night I started with some severe ear pain, a few hours later it burst. Blood and puss came out of my ear, and for the rest of the night puss continued to come out.

I have been to the GP this morning and she had given me some antibiotics.

The problem is, I am travelling to Greece on Monday, and she said she couldn't confirm if I will be able to fly.

I have to go back on Saturday for her to check how the infection is clearing up.

I'm anyone's precious expierenxe, has an ear infection and burst ear drum stopped people flying?

And what would be the reason it stopped me? Would it be the pain?

Other questions I have would be when will I start to feel normal again and when will the pain ease, because I can't see me enjoying a holiday while feeling like this.

I have 4 days to get better, including today.

Any help would be amazing!

I'm very worried.

Hi Josh, the only issue is the Air pressure on the Drum from the inner Ear, perhaps stressing the recovery of your perferation. Personally, I would say that Flying should not be to much of a problem. I have had perferated Drums for years and not had any trouble flying. I would pack some Pain Killers just incase and keep yawning/swallowing during Take off. Your only worry should be a little discomfort wink

      Thank you for the reply!

That's really promising, do you know much about how it would affect a holiday?

Would going under water, swimming pools and the beach be a no no?

No worres. I would do your best not to get water in your Ears because it can flare up an infection if the one you had has not totally gone. You can get Wax Ear Plugs from a pharmacy or just use a little bit of cotton wool with a bit of vaseline on the side that goes into your ear. But more importantly, if you do go swimming, avoid water going up the Nose (like when you jump in or go down a water slide) this tends cause the most problems at it finds its ways into the eustachian tube, then the Ear Cannal. I once got Water in my Ear from a pool in Spain and it gave me an infection for just over 2 Years till they found the right meds. Also try and avoid in ear headphones as it incubates any Bacteria. If your careful, you'll be fine. I hope you have a great Holiday. smile
