Buteyko Mouth Taping

I read something on the BBC website about Buteyko a technique to improve breathing, which can include putting tape on your mouth at night to encourage you to breath in through your nose not your mouth. Isn't this kind of dangerous. How do you breath out

Don't try tape, there are chin straps and mouthpieces to help keep your mouth closed. If you have problems breathing through your nose you can also get breathing strips which open up the airways. Some people find it easy to breath through their noses than others.

If you vomit or get reflux in your sleep and you have tape over your mouth, you could have problems.

I think the BBC did actually say it was not a good idea to tape up your mouth. I think I saw it on Sky News too. It was a Russian idea to try and get people to breath through their noses. There was an article in the Lancet a while back which said it could work for people with asthma.

I would panic beyond with my mouth taped shut, barbaric, I have to breathe out through my mouth, pursed lip breathing as with my lung diseases I tend to retain the carbon dioxide. I was a mouth breather and have trained myself to breathe through my nose but do resort to mouth breathing when panicked and feel short of breathe, which, of course is when I really should nose breathe to get my O2, luckily the alarm on my back pack goes off if I mouth breathe for too long and that brings me round.

I think the Indonesian singer was doing it of her volition, she was not being forced to do it. It was only that very thin masking tape, not sticky type tape she was using.

This is something to discuss with a specialist whom i assume you are receiving treatment from, as various self-help stuff is patient by patient basis.

I am sure the BBC were very precise in their choice of words and phrases used in the article, as to cover their back if someone ends up dying from taping their mouth shut due to one of their articles, claiming to help their illness.

As a general rule, someone suffering from a respiratory condition shouldnt really tape their mouth.

Yes breathing through your nose is optimum but not having a back up (the mouth) could cause you a multitude of other problems.

This is not the best article the BBC have done and im sure if you presented at A&E after doing the advice in the article and it resulted in problems for you. then A&E would likely put it down as 'self harm ?suicidal' and have you checked by the mental heath team.

But i saw it was a RUSSIAN idea. As a traveller and and lover if Russian culture, I can understand this as they do try slightly mad things and I know many people torture their bodies and a 'relaxation and rejuvination' - was slightly crazy if you ask me.

    But they are hardcore. Truly
