Buzzing in chest

Hi everyone,

I'm a 21 year old female who was diagnosed with GAD two years ago. Recently I've been getting a strange sensation in my chest - it's as if my heart is buzzing or "vibrating". It's pretty much constant and does get worse if I'm thinking about it. I keep thinking that my heart is going to stop suddenly or that I have heart disease (I'm not exactly in the greatest physical shape). This did seem to start just after I heard about a family friend who died relatively young of a massive heart attack after training for a marathon (apparently they had a pre-existing cardiovascular condition) and I know that logically my anxiety was probably triggered by that news, but this has been going on for a couple of days and I've never heard about a buzzing feeling in your chest being a symptom of anxiety. I'm also feeling very restless and have to move around a lot (it gets worse at night) and distracting myself seems to be the only thing that makes it better - until I start thinking about it again.

I went to the doctor earlier today and was told I was fine after having my blood pressure checked and my heart listened to, but I can't shake the feeling that it's more than just anxiety. I'm just not sure what to do now; I don't know if I should trust my doctor and try to wait it out or look for advice elsewhere. I'm not on any anxiety meds at the moment, although maybe I should consider it?

(Sorry for the long post...)

I am not a dr.--duh....but I am an expert on anxiety.  I am 52 and I have suffered through it since a teenager,  The one thing I want to reassure you is that anxiety reveals itself in many different ways through our lives.  It sounds to me that you may also be ailing from health anxiety as well as GAD.  Trust your Dr.  If not what are you going to do--keep going to different dr.s until you find one that finally says you are right-you are dying.....those odds are slim to none.

Anxiety is a horrible disease to deal with.  For me, it exposed itself in many different ways through out the years.  I had time when it wAS just bAD heart palpitations then progressing to not being able to breathe and getting pains down my arms (probb imaginary).  Times I lost all memory, times I could not leave my house....the list goes on.

I can tell you that for me, it took a long time of me fighting this but I finally went on medication and that finally helped me.  I don't know why I waited so long for this.  I guess I was afraid of being on a med for this.

I do hope you find some peace.  Maybe do some reading on anxiety and it's effects and treatment for it.

    Good luck

Thank you so much for your reply! Health anxiety does tend to be how my anxiety manifests itself a lot of the time. I always think, "But what if this time it's actually real?" smile Heart palpitations are definitely horrible, but I'm trying to tell myself that everyone gets them at some point and the chances are far greater that this is anxiety than heart problems, especially since I've already been to the doctor.

I was actually on Cipralex (Lexapro) for about a year before I discontinued the meds a while ago, thinking that my anxiety was out of control (and the weight gain was definitely not fun). Looks like I might have to go back on them! Again, thank you, and it sounds like you've been able to recognize your own anxiety symptoms - maybe with time I'll be the same way!

*Sorry, I meant to say I thought my anxiety was under control, not out of control! Though it is starting to feel out of control now, I guess :D

I have it too.. It's like a buzzing / vibration feeling. I got it 4 weeks ago when my anxiety levels were high. I've also noticed when I'm getting on medication for it and other anxiety symptoms. I eat big meals or I'm gassy it happens.

My post just messed up cause the mobile ads -.- I meant to say I'm getting on medication for it and other symptoms. But I do get it after big meals or when I'm gassy. If it's bothering you I would get on meds. I know chest irritation is the worst thing rolleyes

Yeah, mine started after I'd eaten a big meal, too! Maybe it has something to do with indigestion/acid reflux? Whatever it is, I don't like it at all! I'm definitely thinking about going on meds for it as well. I hope your symptoms disappear, too smile

Well I heard anxiety and stress pushes blood to essential organs when your flight or fight mode is activated so digestion could be alittle off just because of anxiety. Apple cider vinegar (with the mother) helps a lot for digestion and everyday I start my day off with a vegetable / fruit smoothie and that helps a lot with digestion and acid reflux if you have it. But I think getting your overall stress levels down will do it ide hate to be on medication for gerd/acid reflux.

Also eating smaller meals and eating slower has helped with the problem. I forgot to mention. I've noticed if it carbs or meat.. Eat very small meals and slowly.
