Calcium

Hi, reading through the forums, I note that you should not take calcium

at the same time as steroids.

What is the best time to take them?

What are the general thoughts on Supplements?

Thanks

I'm glad you asked this question flormac, as I have been taking everything together. Tomorrow I will take my calcuim and vit D at tea time. Anything that might make a difference is worth a go smile

I did not know this but fortunately I have been taking them seperately so I will continue to do so. Good to know.

It's odd, isn't it?  We are told to take calcium because of the effects prednisone has on our calcium metabolism, but not told how to actually gain the benefit from the supplement!  I only found this out myself through reading the forums.  I'd been taking everything together in the morning for a few months.

My calcium and D supplement comes with a morning and night instructions, so I'm glad to have seen this discussion. what a shame GPs don't have this knowledge. does anyone know the best time to take k2 and magnesium?

I don't think it matters with K2.  I take mine with calcium.  Extra magnesium should be taken separately from calcium (and probably from pred) because you may not absorb enough as calcium gets in the way.  My understanding is if the magnesium is already present in a calcium supplement when you start taking calcium that helps to maintain the calcium/magnesium balance, but if you've been taking calcium naked so to speak for a while that balance may have been upset so it's best to take it at a separate time.  That's why I enjoy Epsom salt baths every once in a while, but my calcium supplement includes a small amount of magnesium, and one should also get plenty from a varied diet.

There's not enough hours in the day and meals to eat to take all these meds correctly! I need a timetable haha.

So true.  I guess I've been taking my second iron dose wrong because you are supposed to have it before a meal and I usually remember it after I've eaten lunch.  rolleyes  Oh well.
