Calcium found on kidneys on ultra sound

Hi, i have had untreated hypertension for some years, only recently gone on medication. The gp referred me for a kidney ultrasound as they were saying im too young for hypertensio (26). The ultrasound show calcium on kidneys (informed by GP telephone consultation for something else). I have also suffered back and leg pain for around 12m which is getting worse, i take 150g pregablin 3 x a day which is not masking any of the pain. I can hardly walk as in too much pain and getting rsther frustrating. One leg is 100x more painful than other. The gp wants to see me friday to discuss results and feel my abdomin befero making further referrals. Im in alot of pain and dont know whether to go a&e??

    Hi Sam

Going to A&E for a 12 month back and leg problem may not go down well , sounds like you have sciatica...

Calcifcations on kidneys can mean lots of different things and not always bad.

Good thing is your GP wants to see you so when you see him/her tell them re back pain aswell, I have calification in my Left kidney but have never had any pain from it.

Hopefully your kidney blood tests were normal as you didnt mention them .

Do you have any Cholesterol probs, overweight, smoke or drink alcohol?

    Good luck with your GP

Sam, like Jane, I’m thinking your leg pain sounds very like sciatica - does your leg tend to lose feeling?  If you haven’t had a scan of your spine, then ask your GP to refer you for one just to rule out a spinal problem leading to the leg pain.  Look up Bowen therapists on your area - they are excellent at relieving the pain of sciatica.  Does the calcium problem show up in blood tests for calcium or is it purely on the kidneys.  If you drink beer, then cutting it out may resolve the issue as it can cause calcium grit to form

Hi sorry to mention, yes i got diagnosed with sciatica a few years ago.

Im unsure regarding the blood tests untill i go back to the drs on friday for all results.

I ended up at the out of hours gp on sunday and was told go have more pain relief which seems to have worked a little and also antibiotics for tonsilitus that came on rapidly in no time.

Im just mainly concerned about the calcium deposits found on my kidneys. I do smoke and enjoy a bottle of wine at the weekend. I just feel so exhausted... even the house work seems soo hard to tackle.

Sam, you will do your health a great big favour by cutting out smoking.  As we age we are at more risk of succumbing to illness and the first thing they ask when they are investigating as to a diagnosis is whether you smoke/have ever smoked.

I do wish doctors wouldn’t be so cavalier about just telling you to increase pain medication.   As you are already being investigated for a kidney condition, do ensure you don’t take any medications of the NSAID family such as Ibuprofen. Taking them long term can damage the kidneys - I learnt that to my cost!  Roll on your appointment with your GP on Friday.

Hi yes i have cut out naproxen that i had been taking years for abdominal pain.

Do you have more info regarding the calcium on my kidneys or any suggestions of questions for me to ask the GP friday please.

Sam,  I'm not familiar with calcium on kidneys but, as Jane has said in her reply, it can be due to a lot of different things, not necessarily bad.  So your question should be put to your doctor and, if you feel you don't get a reassuring reply, then, if it was me, I would be asking for referral to a nephrologist for his/her opinion.   Start by asking the doctor things like, "what is the cause of calcium on the kidney; can it be cured or will it progress; is there anything that you can do personally to help it?"  If you have any other questions in your mind between now and the appointment, do write out a list as it is easy to forget something when you are with the Dr.  Quicker, too, when you only have a 10 minute appointment.

      Are you overweight??

Hypertension in a 26yr old is normally associated with obesity and high cholesterol which would not be helped by smoking and drinking as that would increase the fatty deposits in the arteries and veins leading to calcification of organs etc

      Hi Jane,

I wouldnt say i was massively overweight, im 11 stone and 5ft 6. I have had hypertension since my youngest, had pre eclampsia. He is now nearly 5. Im normally fit and active but have been avoiding the gym since my severe leg pain. Im now on day 5 of being bed bound as it hurts too much to get up and move. The pain now is just localised to one leg and is really frustrating me amd waking me up at night

      Hi Sam

So not overweight, but... the pre eclampsia explains alot!

Try and mobilise the last thing you want is a DVT!

You need to see your gp maybe get a referral for physio. Can you get some crutches so you can at least get around and take the weight of your lower back and pelvis while you are weight bearing.

      Hope you get sorted soon.

      Good luck x

Hi ive been back to the doctors today, they have referred me to a kidney specialist (12th june is earliest appt and was a cancellation). Also my white blood cell count was high so they want to repeat in 2 weeks to see if is still high

Sam, white cells multiply in response to an infection generally.  Didn’t you say that you were recently diagnosed with tonsillitis?  If that is now under control, the white cells may have normalised by the time of the next blood test.......as long as you keep infection/free.
