Calcium supplements?

I was just wondering if any of you guys take calcium supplements? I've heard that UC can damage your bone density and my body is aching. Wondering if its worth taking calcium to help this?

I think it's more the steroids that can affect bone density than UC itself, and I find when on a high dose of the steroids anyway after a flare up I'm generally achey due to being run down. I take Ad-Cal D3 it's calcium and vitamin D twice a day I get it on prescription though, and I try and have a reasonably high calcium diet. I think it's worth asking for them whilst on steroids. I take them all the time but that's due to my coeliac disease as well.

Hope that helps, take care. Elaine x

thank you. I might give it a couple more weeks so im not on as many steriods to see if it calms down. I just generally feel achy but as you said this could be due to high dosage of steriods that im on at the moment, thanks again x

I agree with other post, I was given calcium because of steroids not UC but my body aches all the time, due to general poor health and inflammation I think. I have pain relief every day, it's so bad some days I could cry, most days I feel like I'm made of lead, ask about pain relief for the really bad days.

Hi Charlotte....steroids can leave you feeling very achy if u r on them . Calcium needs to be taken with magnesium ......magnesium should be half the dose of calcium u are taking. It's worth reading info on calcium and  magnesium from natural therapy sites as calcium is not all it's cracked up to be re the dosages that are recommended. Vit D is  better in spray form for under your tongue as it's better absorbed and it is very good anti inflammatory and vit k also for ur bone matrix. The immunosuppressants also leave one very achy.        Mary Jo

    Hi Charlotte

I odn't really know much about the effects UC have but if thats what it does to the bones I think taking supplements won't be such a bad idea. My adviseis make sure they are 100% natural.

Hi all, just a point to consider, with uc you can also be prone to kidney stones . i have uc & have had 4 kidney stone episodes  in my life time at 43. my urologist told me to stop taking calcium supplements several years ago as my urine content showed high calcium levels which contributes to kidney stone formation.  You can still have dairy in your diet as normal healthy people this is not proven to make you any more susceptible to kidney stones. & drink at least 2 litres of water per day (includes squash/ tea). I was also told weight bearing exercise helps bone density. while its hard with uc to exercise due to constant tiredness & lack of energy, just a gentle short walk or an exercise bike in the garage gently for 5/10 mins a day can help maintain bone density. its a sod isnt it - one health problem always seems to present another. take care & hope you improve.
