Calf pain!

Hi guys... Im looking for someone who can give me some insight. I sprained my ankle pretty bad a month ago... There is still swelling and hurts sometimes. But today I started to get calf pain.... On the right side of my calf.... Where I think the muscle connects with the ankle?? Im super worried about a blood clot! You think my sprained ankle could cause this pain?

    Hello,

I am sorry you are going through this. I was in a cast for a few weeks so I know how frustrating, uncomfortable and scary it can be.

My surgeon and physics therapist told me that if there is a blood clot, then the pain would be so bad that you wouldn’t be able to tolerate it and it would hurt for you to even touch your leg/cast. Have you been taking an aspirin on a daily basis?

It is also very important to have enough magnesium and pottasium in your diet, if you are unable to eat food rich in those, then I would recommend taking supplements. And as with anything, please check with your doctor first.

I hope you feel better soon!

    Hi Christina

I've had several sprained ankles over my lifetime. My last sprain turned out to require surgery. I now wish I'd gotten an MRI right away to see what's really going on. Have you seen an orthopedist yet?  My insurance covered the MRI since I"d been in pain for more than a month.

You say the right side of your calf. Is that on your left or right leg? If it's on the right leg you might have injured the peroneus tendon. It connects the lateral calf muscles to the lateral side of the foot and is often torn in an ankle sprain. I just had to have mine repaired.

If you haven't yet seen a doctor, you should definitely go!

    Hi,

?Sorry to hear you're in pain. Sprained ankles can do all sorts, pull/stretch/injury muscles and tendons and not just in the ankle itself but those attached. Sometimes you won't even know about the injury and it appears as a problem elsewhere.

?I would get it checked out by your Doctor. It could be bruising, some sort of injury to tendons etc. Would be worth having it checked and maybe having some physiotherapy too for what must have been a very bad ankle sprain. If you are still in pain and getting swelling then its still worth following RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for your ankle/leg until you can get properly checked out.

Good luck and I hope it gets better soon. Let us know how you get on!
