I needed steroid injectionsin back post surgery. Because of severe pain down back of thigh. Much better but now suddenly pain in calf. Just as I progressed to elbow crutches. Do I try to exercise through it ?

If the leg isnt hot and red, I would still exercise as the calf muscle needs stretching, it could be because you have changed to crutches so walking differently. Try to get someone to massage it for you, I still get this occasionally usually when my knee on non op side is playing up so I walk differently.

If the calf is hot or red get GP to check it out as you don't want a blood clot.

Hi there Anne. Just wondering if you are still wearing your T.E.D's? Have you considered that it might be a thrombosis.?Have you seen your GP? Please be careful! Best wishes Suzie

Hi Ann:  The muscle aches that radiate from the hip along the hemstring, down to the knee and then down to the calf was the worse.  I pumped my feet every hour, did all my exercises but the calf pain was horrible.  Since there was no swelling and both my calves were about the same size, I got my hubby to massage it and it hurt like hell.  Then started calves exercises and  started taking my magnesium and calcium and continued with the massage and exercises. Had to take painkillers so i cou;ld sleep. By week 5 the pain felt like it was radiating down to my ankle and then to my foot which was tingly. I did my back exercises and rested and tried not to sit as much and then it went away. I use a scarf to pull my ankle towards my knee, I hold for 15 seconds and release and do it agaiin for 10 times and I do 3 sets.  With my first operation, the surgeon explained that all the muscles and tendons tend to be mangled, cut, displaced and all the swelling puts pressure. As it starts healing it all contracts and tense up so even if it does not feel comfortable, stretch as much as possible.  For me, the pool and the gymn are my second homes since I am very active and being laid up without exercising for even a few days, causes everything to tighten up. I do not know if it is the same for you but I always feel better when I am moving. Hope you feel better.

    hi ann,

warm welcome to the hippies forum -

when did you get steriod injections in your back post-op from hip replacement surgery?

could the calf pain be related to the severe back of thigh pain you were experiencing ?

is it cramps or dull ache ?

I agree with other members to have it checked by your surgeon as soon as possible -

please let us know the outcome and how you are getting on, okay ..

    big warm hug

    renee

Hi Ann:  I remember my doctor mentioning that there could be a small probabiliuty that the sciatic nerve could be affected by the surgery and it could cuase radiating , dull pain down the thigh. back of leg, calf to the foot. Have you seen or talked to your surgeon?
