Calprocten test

Hi, just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to have crohns with a negative calprocten test? I know this picks up inflammation and crohns is inflammation, but just curious if it's possible to get a false positive. I have been getting symptoms of ibs for many years and just lived with it but the past couple of years things have intensified, constant nausea, vomiting, right upper abdo pain, more sharp or dull poking pains, not the usual ibs craps I know and love! There also seems to be a bulge to the right store side of my abdomen, but bit no publish obvious sold solid lump. Historically my ibs has favoured constipation, with the occasional bout of diarrhoea, but in the past 18 months I've had near constant diarrhoea, going 3-4 times a day on average. The past year I've also started getting random joint pains and mouth ulcers, and generally feeling crap, which I've read can be a sign off crohns, and I've had an anal fissure for years, which doesn't bleed much just gives me pain, and after 1 failed botox I just put up with it. All these seem to be quite consistent with crohns, but is that totally ruled out by the negative calprocten?

I'm under a gastro specialist who isn't concerned, I just want to know what's causing this pain, it's so different to ibs!!

All I can say is that if your stool sample was several hours old when it went in for testing it's quite possible that it would show no inflammation.

Sometimes, if you take it to your doctors, it has to wait For collection and then to be delivered.

I have done it this way and it's the only time it's ever showed no inflammation. Previously it was taken by the hospital so was tested immediately. Last time I did it for the GP I took it to Pathology at the hospital myself to make sure it was still fresh. Within 4hours........it came back raised at over 230!!

Is it possible that your sample was too many hours old before it was tested?? Was it taken by your GP or a Gastroenterologist??

    Hope that's helpful

Hi Vicky. Yes it is possible if you were in remission. Its not easy to diagnose crohns. I had a calprocten of greater than 6000 wen I was very sick and about 4months later done my calprocten levels again and it was less than 15. I was told its likely I had a severe infection but small chance it could be crohns as if I was in remission my calprocten levels would be normal. I would go to the doctors and do it again wen your having your worse symptoms. Most tests will come bk normal if in remission. I'm in the same boat as you. I've had IBS yes and I'm getting diarrhea and stomach cramps that I've not got before with IBS. My consultant said I need to just go back if I get sick again and that's the best time to do all the tests.
