Calprotectin markers came back at 161, what does this mean?

Hello

I have been having bowel problems for years. I have been to the Drs and I sent off 2 stool samples 2 weeks apart. The first result for calprotectin was 114 the second was 161. What should I expect to happen next? What tests will be done? Is the score very high?

Thank you

    Hi

Those results aren’t actually that high. I had two tests done and had >1400 in one, and >300 in the other. I was rushed in for a colonoscopy with biopsies yet they found nothing wrong, in fact my rectum, colon and terminal ileum looked very healthy apparently.

A score of 50 or below is considered normal, 50 to 100 isn’t much of a worry but further investigations could be suggested, and over 100 would normally need further investigation. However, the test isn’t very accurate and can give false positive results, especially if you have had a stomach bug, or been taking NSAIDs recently.

Further investigation will also depend on your current symptoms, I’m presuming you have been having some problems lately, hence why you had the faecal calprotectin tests done?

      Hi

That's made me feel a lot better.

I've been suffering with problems for a very long time around 10 years.i just thought it was ibs. I've had a blood test and I have low iron too, so on iron tablets.

      No problem.

I've been struggling for the past 4 years with no apparent reasoning behind it, and I too have been diagnosed with IBS. I'd certainly be interested in what further investigations they decide to do, if any, and the outcome of those investigations. Please do let us know what happens.

All the best for the future.
