Can a cleft mother give birth to a cleft baby?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have unilateral cleft lip and palate, age 30. I am planning to get pregnant but scared of passing on the deformity to my baby. What are the chances of this nightmare becoming true? Is there anything I can do before pregnancy to avoid transferring faulty genes to my baby? Please help. I am super nervous. I am from India.

There is a chance yes as it is genetic but discuss this with your GP who can offer you more advice and support.

Research says most cases of cleft lip or cleft palate are caused by genetic factors. Either parents can pass on genes that cause this to happen.
