Can a kidney stone still sitting in the lower kidney cause frequent urination?

I just found out that I have a 8mm stone sitting in the lower left kidney. 2 UTIs in five months lead me to the discovery. I had the last UTI about a month ago but the frequent urination hasn’t stopped. I’ve had 2 urine cultures that say there’s no infection. One doctor prescribed me antibiotics anyway which don’t seem to be helping. I’m terrified that I have interstitial cystitis because my bladder feels so irritated. But I am wondering if a 8mm stone sitting the kidney, not really blocking anything or causing pain, could some how cause or contribute to frequent urination. Any insight would be so helpful. Thank you!

    Hi Jasmine,

I have an 8mm in my lower left kidney and it makes me feel unwell on and off all the time, at the end of the day it's a foreign body inside you so everybody reacts differently. My gp says they can move about and then settle again I believe what side you sleep on can make a difference.

Thanks Kristy. I have a CT scan next week to confirm the size and then an appointment with a specialist. Hoping for a non invasive resolution because I’m afraid a cystoscopy might really tear up an already sensitive area sad  I hope you feel better too. Sometimes just thinking about the stone in there gives me flank pain.

When you say you are seeing a specialist I hope you mean a urologist?

They are the ones who can really help you with this and give you the answer to your question.

In the meantime drink plenty. Robinson's Lemon Barley Water is good for kidney stones.

Is there any blood in your urine? This would be an indication that the stone needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your reply. No blood currently in urine, and its a female urologist that I have an appointment with. Unfortunately I'm starting to think the stone isnt causing the frequent urination- every hour, sometimes 30 min. I think it could just be connected to the past infection, or flora imbalance. Regardless I need to deal with the stone though. Ugh.. Thanks for listening... I'll start drinking the lemon water now.

    Hi Jasmin

I have just had PCNL operation just over week ago I had a 25 mm stone in my lower pole of my left kidney. It never hurt only mild back ache and feeling sick. Had it 3yrs 1st time they tried shattering it but could only manage 20% I had a stent in for a week which was dead uncomfortable. I said leave it while I had a knee operation. It had grown quite a lot and I was sent to another urologist who performed the operation I will go back in 4 weeks time for the results . Oh I did have a water infection after they put the stent in and results were e coli bacteria. So antibiotics it cleared up . I'm glad it's all over and I don't want anymore . Let me know how you get on you need it sorting . Oh and I did urinate lots more so in the night after my op I noticed I was in full flow and only it was over so quickly what a different I have noticed other differences like I'm not irratable any more . Take care x

    Hello Jasmin,

In my opinion you very well still have a slight infection there. Though I have personally had kidney stones which led to UTIs. After a variety of medication and antibiotics, I was seeing no results. Usually the pain and infection would get better then return in a month or so. What helped me most were natural vitamins and supplements. I am all good now and still take some to cleanse my system from time to time. Been more than 2 years since I started and haven't had any issues. I would gladly recommend if it would help.

I had kidney stones all last year and had frequent UTI's with them.

Fortunately in December last year I had stones removed by keyhole surgery and am now fine.

Hope you manage to sort this one out I know how painful kidney stones can be.

Take care and keep in touch

    Sarah
