Can alcohol consumption bring on psoriatic arthritis

Diagnosed with PA in my fingers about 3 years ago. At first it only affected 2 fingers and was started on methotrexate. Was on it for about 12 weeks but it scared me to death ( I work in a surgery so was able to look at the side effects in detail) but felt I could cope with life without these powerful drugs so stopped. As I have absolutely no psoriasis I was also unconvinced it was PA and convinced myself it was just osteo but now 3 years later all but two of my fingers are affected. My sister used to be covered in psoriasis with no arthritis and since becoming teetotal her psoriasis has cleared up! I wonder if anyone has any experience similar where quitting alcohol has cleared their problem? We did hammer the booze fairly regularly to be honest.

Hi Carole . My psoriasis started in 1991 when I was 30. For other reasons I gave up alcohol in 2003 but have had 2 very nasty flare-ups of my psoriasis since. Recently diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis after moderate nail psoriasis for about 5 years.

So, in answer to your query, alcohol not necessarily a factor in flare ups or improvement. Also, gave up smoking a year ago and nail psoriasis much worse since then. Wishing you all the best Carole.

Hi Carole  had p for 25 years pa in the last 3 I had to take methatrexate as was struggling to walk feet and legs were seizing up I was 50 I need to keep working ,seems to work for me so far .as for alcohol although I never drank much I did find red wine a trigger in the past I rarely consume alcohol if I do I stick with g&t .I have eliminated a lot of foods after reading a book by dr/proffeser case( think that's what his name is) he treated arthritis patients he insisted it was effected by what we put into our body's .i don't eat dairy/white bread /meat /and recently stopped eating the nightshade vegtables (mainly tomatoes) people think I am picky I get fed up defending my choices .but my p has stopped advancing and cleared in places (face) I can still do an active job and have been digging my  large garden . I have tried to help myself and read a lot on p and pa I try and keep my liver clean I was and am very scared that pa may take my mobility away from me .hope this helps .

can you tell me how they diagnoised your PA? My xrays and bloods are coming back as normal but i suspect this is due to the early stage of the disease, joints are stiff and tender but their is no large scale swelling so i am currently not being given DMARDs.

Have you found your diet helping your PA? How has MTX been for you over the last three years, i understand it can provide remission in most people?

      Thanks

No foods or drink has ever a fêted my PSA. I have had for yrs plus Psoriasis.

i don't take methotrexate, or othe meds. I have seen to many suffer wih the side effects of drugs from steroids to bio drugs. Sometimes they have good results. At this time for me results are not substantial.

a good rheumy can take blood tests to verify which type of arthritis u have. Rheumatoid arthrithis is similar to psoriatic. The proteins in the blood test will give u a final answer. Have u been diagnosed with PSA? Methotrexate meds is to stop the damage to the joints. These meds are given to prevent permanent damage to the joints.

check wit UR dr on stopping UR meds. U can try other meds newer that are designed to block the damage to the joints from PSA.

I will take meds when they have been on the market longer. I keep up with the new drugs. Many studies online. I really find having many types of arthritis has started severe anxiety . I have started cheesygrin to manage & control my anxiety & stress

I dont think Alcohol can bring on PA, what you may find is that you perhaps have an intolerance to some of the ingredients in the alochol which might make you feel worse. Out of interest, are you back on a DMARD now and has this helped your condition. The reputation of first line DMARDs also alarms me but the reality is that they have been used for over 50yrs in treatment and regular blood tests can make sure they arent doing more harm than good.

I agree with UR advice .. Just because meds r around for 50 yrs does not make them tolerable or safe. I cannot take them....the side effects make me sicker than the disease. For some of us that's a reality, others can feel better with DEMARDs. Some drugs can cause serious progression of some types of arthritis. My doc warned me about a few .

its always an individual decision trials of different drugs that help rather than causing worse illness. I'm sure u all r painfully aware of how difficult just making a decision taking a drug can be.

back to CAROLS alcohol issue. Arthritis is a autoimmune disease. The body is attacked by its own autoimmune system. There is no cure for any autoimmune disease and psoriasis is also anautoimmune disease. I have both psoriatic arthritis and psoraisis. I have been in remission from psoriasis for 3 &1/2  years. Not found remission yet for psoriatic arthritis.

I do treat my PSA .

Alcohol has never made my condition with PSA better or worse. It makes my body relax. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant. To much defeats the purpose. I hope this helps ..

      (( hugs))
