Can alcohol stop antidepressants from working?

Can alcohol stop the meds from working because that seems to be what has happened to me and when i look back in the past when i was on antidepressants years ago it was the same thing. If i drank alcohol they would stop working for months. Could this be the case and why do you think that is? I start getting worsening depression, symptoms of withdrawal like dizziness and tiredness.
