Can anyone answer this???

I have HSV2 for 18 years. Is it true that transmission rates decrease the longer you have it? I currently use daily supresssive therapy (Valtrex 500mg) and use condoms and am just trying to be as cautious as possible

Outbreaks and shedding do generally diminish over time (there was a study done on this), but it can still be transmissible. There was a recent case where a woman had it for many years (20 years, I think?) and gave it to a new partner, who sued her. Just as an example.

Thanks for you post. I am trying to be as careful as possible (he knows) but it is so hard to truly let go and enjoy myself because I am soooo scared of passing it on. This sucks sad

If you are taking all precautions, it should be fine, so don't worry too much. That case I cited, the woman took *no* precautions, not even condoms if I recall correctly, since she thought the only thing she needed to do is avoid sex during outbreaks. Should have mentioned that, sorry!

She also didn't tell the guy that she has it.

Sometimes it is hard to tell if I am in an outbreak or not....I don't know if I am beginning one or it is just me freaking out. If I am in an outbreak (and we atill use condoms & daily antivirals, which I never miss taking) what are the chances he will get it?

BTW thanks for always answering my questions smile

That is hard to answer, but the odds of you having breakthrough recurrences whilst on daily suppressive meds, especially after so many years, should be quite low.

Before the meds, were you able to tell? I would imagine it should feel the same. I purposely stayed off the meds (not in a relationship, so not an issue) to see what my natural outbreak frequency would be like, as well as to better recognise outbreaks, and I now have a pretty good idea.

For me, at least, it starts off with a slight swelling that feels a bit off to the touch. This will then become more swollen and sore over 1-2 days, during which time a small lesion can sometimes be seen.

Whenever you're unsure, you can always double the meds for a few days (500 mg morning, 500 mg evening).

Yeah, thats what i have done is double up. Before I started daily antivirals (about 6 months ago) I rarely had OBs. When I did it was in only one location (small bump on inner labia) so I could always tell. I think I am just so paranoid.....thanks for your input biggrin
