Hi. I'm totally new to this but am desperate for some advice on being newly diagnosed with TN. It all started in November 2016 with a sudden pop in my face and the onset of pain. As I've always suffered with my sinuses ( have previously had an operation on them) the GP and I just presumed it was an infection and I was treated with antibiotics but after the course finished I was still in pain. I was eventually seen by ENT and had an MRI scan and was told my sinuses were fine and I probably just had TN ( their words not mine) was prescribed some drugs but they did nt really help. I get an attack every 7 to 8 weeks or like now I've just had a cold and now my face is killing me. The doc is refusing to let me be seen by a neurologist even though ENT said i should be. I am weary to take any of the strong drugs without being seen by a specialist as I have read about the side effects. Please any help or information gratefully received. It really effects my life and makes me feel very down.

Hi, there is only one thing to do. I went on a drug until it stopped working, then another which made me unable to function so I figured it out...you get a surgery and end the pain! I did radio frequency surgery with a neural doctor. He has done lots of these. And i was out of pain immediately and am still out of it. though it took three tries because it kept coming back after 11 months or so. Now I have numbness and trouble eating in front of people, but I don't have the pain, so that is a tradeoff. No pain for weird eating habits. Because I am out of that horrid pain, I don't care about the eating limitations.
Get a surgery, there are several and get away from the doc who won't help you. I had one of those and had to go around him to get the help I needed and now I am so much happier!!!!!

I'm not sure your advice is that attractive. Numbness and the inability to be at ease when eating in front of people, are serious drawbacks. Personally, I would make every effort to work 'with' my GP not try to get 'round' him or her. Explore the medication route thoroughly before going down the 'surgical' route, would be my advice and get your GP on board with you.
