Can Asacol given to an IBS patient cause Ulcerative Colitis

Hi,

I've had Ibs for most of my life, some 30 years( I'm 38) . I've ended up in hospital several times and I've been given everything from lopermide,  bacterial antibiotics to more trial medications like Creon.

Several months ago I was trialled on asacol for IBS.Within days my stomach swelled in pain like never before,  I started taking codeine to be able to function because even after stopping the asacol the pain remained. The codeine constipated me, causing me to end up in hospital a few times and a colonoscopy ( a year since a previous one) has now revealed UC. I then was put on Mercaptopurine and I'm writing this from hospital because I can't hardly walk with strong joint pain ( I think it's joint) and I've had severe flu like symptoms over a week now. They have just switched me to  sulphasolazine and I'm holding no hope and guessing this will majorly bloat me again.

Could asacol of caused the UC after a few days use in an Ibs patient ?

Thanks

Hi,sorry to hear you are so poorly.I too was diagnosed with IBS years ago and now two years ago I am diagnosed with UC. I was put on Pentasa which halted my flare but after several months my abdo cramps were getting worse so I am now on Asacol.Seems to be controlling the UC but I still get cramps every few days, along with bloating etc. After loads of research I have cut out Wheat/ Gluten and take digestive enzymes. It's very early days but this regime appears to be helping a lot to alleviate cramps etc As for your question,I really wouldn't have thought Asacol caused your UC? Asacol is mainly anti inflammatory and relatively mild as far as UC drugs go. Good luck and feel better soon x

      Jill,

Thanks for the response. I just have been trialled on so many drugs, it's confusing . Diet wise, try FODMAP, a lot of people have success with that. The problem we both have is even if they treat the UC the IBS remains.

I hope you have better luck than me!

      Thanks
