Can CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) help?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hello,

Just thought I'd put this out there, to hear other peoples experiences.

My Doctor wants me to try CBT before he puts me on any other medication.

I take 50mg of Amitryptilene, helps with the sleep, but not so much the pain.

Have you tried this? Has it helped?

Thanks, Anne

I m actually taking lyrica 225 mg and norco 10 mg 4 x a day.  My pain dr had me in oxycotin an then morphine for a while the morphine made me too tired.  I also went off my nighttime sleep meds.  I felt like I was taking too many meds.  My sleep meds would make me get up and eat without being aware of it.  I am also taking effexor for the depression.

    Hi Anne,

Thank you for replying to my post. I have been on Amitryptilne, but it made me so tired and also many other side effects that I had to stop them. My main problem is I am so hypersensitive to medication that they cause me more problems than they resolve. I don't know what CBT is, but I hope it helps you. I have had major problems since undergoing a hysterectomy operation many years ago, after the operation went wrong I had an horrendous infection and had to have two further operations to put this right, I barely survived but my health has not been right since. I also feel my thyroid and my adrenal glands are not right, but Consultant at the hospital disagrees. As I don't cope with convenential medicine I have decided to do some research of my own to see if I can find something that at least might help with thyroid and adrenal glands to see if this might help me. The pain for the present I will just have to manage as best I can, but the old saying is very very true " you can handle most things better after a good night's sleep" so I am making this my top priority at present and then work my way down the list of my other problems! Might take a little while, but I will get there.

    Hi Anne,

I did 12 sessions of CBT and it did help emotionally.  Helped me put some things in perspective.  It wasn't 'The Answer' but it was nice to talk and work through some of the emotional side.  As stress makes our symptoms worse, if they can help us lower our stress then it should help. It's better to try than to wonder what if?

I've had CBT, I don't feel it helped me at all. It's all about dealing with the here and now and changing the way we see or think about things, which is all well and good but I had issues in my past that I felt needed to be dealt with before I could move on. It may well help you though and anything is worth a try surely xx

      Hello,

Many thanx for your reply. I tend to agree with you, I tried it once before for depression, and I did come through it, but not covinced the CBT helped. But as you say, anything is worth a try.

    Hi Anne

My Rheumatologist wants me to go on a CBT course too. I am not sure about it, as I have great difficulty walking into a room with more than one person in it. And If there is only one person and I have never met them before, I just go to pieces. shaking sweating etc. Im just hopeless..Regards..Anne..

      Hello Anne,

Good to hear from you again. This CBT is done by telephone, so it might be worth you investigating whether this is available in your area.

    Hello,

I have tried CBT and I would definitely give it a go. I am also trying mindfulness meditation as I am keen to try anything to avoid having to increase my medication. Neither of them are miracle cures but they are helping me to look at what I CAN do rather than what I can't. The CBT also helped me to learn to pace myself and accept my limitations without being hard on myself. I still get very frustrated as I can't do what I used to - I was only diagnosed 7 months ago so am still on a steep learning curve. Hope CBT helps you.

      Hello Denise,

Thanx for your reply. I totally agree with what you say about the medication, and my Doctor is also reluctant to give me any more medication. I feel that some Doctors don't understand the condition and just throw painkillers at it. Nevertheless it is still difficult to accept your limitations, and that is something I find very upsetting.

I'verecently had a website recommended by my physiotherapist. It's called headspace and it helps you learn mindfulness. It's an easy way to start understanding how the process works and it gives you 10 minutes out of every day to just chill out.

give it a try, I've found it helpful
