From everything I've read it usually occurs on the left side. Not sure why. However mine has occurred on the right side. I have breast pain, chest pain and underarm pain. I also have trouble breathing when in a flare-up and it was especially troublsome when I first got this terrible condition. I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago. It has finally calmed down but I always have to be careful what I do so as not to cause another flare-up. Good luck and take good care of yourself.

very common among the pain, I started when I first pulled muscle 2004, when trying to pick up something heavy , got my shoulders pulled almost out of sockets, but didn't just pulled muscles, let it go ,before I had MRI on my shoulder which showed arthritis, and had some rehab , there's no showing of the pulled muscle in your sternum. I still got it if I make a move to fast , turning to look on my right side view when I turn , it knocks the breath out of me when I feel the 2 cheast bones rub together. or the weather gets bitter, I live in Erie pa and that's very common and can change at any minute. it's enbrassing when ppl ask me if I'm ok , knocks the breath out of me , my dentist has the same thing , and he was checking my teeth and i saw him reach for his chest and i adked what was up and he had it to . for awhile , it scares you if you dont know whats going on its that pain that throws u off.

Both conditions can radiate into the ribs and further. Both can be worse either on left or right. That depends on the cause, which can be all sorts of direct or indirect injury or stress Physical or emotional) on the cartilage. Stress to the cartilage can arise form other places, i.e. muscles that have been injured and are not healing, or are overly tense due to repetitive stress, bad posture, old, unhealed injuries, bra pressure, handbag or backpack etc etc.
You need to think about what the cause may be and take measures to sort that out.
If there is unhealed injury, repetitive injury, continuing stress, etc. the cartilage will not heal and taking pain killers will simply blur the issue, so the inflammation will spread and you will not even know.
good luck. Go see a doctor for a diagnosis to exclude other causes.
