I had an old friend tell me that it can, I didn't really think it could, I'm a non smoker but my home has been smoked in in the past, sometimes I get muscle tension in my upper back and it feels like I can't breathe and i feel as if I have to force myself to take deep breaths

This is rubbish deep breathing is good for you and is helpful wen having a panic attack etc and helps makes you calm down. Practise deep breathing exercises for anxiety and calm. Who ever told you this is speaking out of their bumĀ

I know a lot of people have confusion over the term "hyperventilating".  The truth is that some people over breath and some tend to hold breath or under breath.  Slow deep breathing is meant to help both situations and is not harmful in any way.  Even breathing incorrectly does not cause COPD unless you have a cigarette in your mouth.
