Can I catch herpes if I already have it?

I have never been tested but am pretty sure I have hsv1. I've gotten cold sores on my lips for as long as I can remember and I'm 31. I only get them 1 or 2 times a year. My girlfriend also get them on her lips, never on her genitals, but she had a cold sore and I let her give me oral sex. Can I catch herpes on my penis now? I assumed sense I already had it that I couldn't catch it again.

    hi cecil3030,

Since she had a cold sore, you also have risk to catch the virus on your penis. But during an oral sex, she hasn't experience an outbreak, so the risk might be low. If you notice some abnormal sensations and tiny sores on the penis, should get tested for herpes fast. In case the result is possitive, antiviral treatments, such as prosurx, acyclovir, valtrex may help you treat the virus. Best wishes to you!

    I understand your Q.

You mean that you already antibodies againt herpes type 1.

But unfortunately you still have the chance to get it on your penis.

Having herpes in mouth doesnt mean you will not get it on your penis.

It was wrong she gave you oral while she had oral outbreak.

I cant blame her, we was messing around and I wanted it to. We discussed her outbreak and we both figured since I already had it and it was in my body that it was a non issue. Now I feel stupid. How long before I can get testep for it or would that do any good since I already have it? Also how long before I should see the outbreak on my penis if I caught it down there.

Actually many people have wrong thoughts.

Having hsv 1 in mouth doesnt make you resistant to genital hsv1.

I have met real cases getting it like that.

Regarding blood tests, now of course you have igG since long time coz you have oral hsv1. But you can do igM. Ig M becomes positive after about 1 week of new exposure and then becomes negative again after few weeks. So if you get a recent exposure by your gf so it should be positive now.

If you have HSV1 on the mouth you will be resistant to catching HSV1 at another site such as your genitals.

Likewise someone with HSV2 at one site cant get reinfected with HSV2 at another site.

But HSV1 antibodies give you no resistance to HSV2 (nor the other way around)

So its' worth getting tested to find out which you have
