Can I claim PIP

hi. I was diagnosed with RA last August and in January I was started on oral MTX. I have just taken my four weekly dose. Now combined with this I a, also an insulin dependent diabetic and have some nerve damage in my torso and feet. The pain in the torso is well controlled with neurological agents and painkillers but with the RA and nerve damage in my feet I do struggle walking any real distance at times. I work to keep active and not give in to it however some days it's a struggle to get out of bed, although I do and go to work. I also get shortage of breathe which I thought was do to lack of exercise but have learnt that RA will affect the lungs. Can anyone advise whether I would be a candidate to claim PIP (previously disability living allowance) as at times I could do with some help like shopping and carrying heavy items and such like. Recently I got a puncture and was unable to change my wheel myself and had to call the RAC out. Any advise would help.

    Hi Martin

I have PA and am on MTX. I also have neuropathies. I was on DLA and the PIP is a replacement for that. Everybody is eventually going to have to apply for PIP anyway as it is the new DLA which is being phased out.

Unfortunately there is no straight answer as it depends on how much this disease affects you.

I would say if you are struggling to work (which I'm not surprised!) perhaps go and discuss it with your doctor. You can also go to citizens advice bureau for help.

The bottom line is PIP is the same as DLA so if you already receive a component there's no reason you shouldn't carry on getting that. Extra (either mobility or carers allowance) depends on your circumstances and how much the disease affects you.

Sorry that is the best I can advise 😊😊

Thanks Lisa. I will talk to my RA consultant in March when I am reviewed regarded PIP. Thank you for your advise, much appreciated

You are welcome, not much help I'm afraid but one thing you should ask your consultant maybe is whether he/she would recommend you carry on working, cut your hours maybe or not at all. Your consultant will have a better idea of the severity of your illness 😊 Best of luck
