Can I insist on a resection???

Hi all -Im on Methotrexate at the moment - I only have 5mg to go before I reach the max dose but its not working anyway.  My doctor has made me wait from 7th April until 25th June for an MRI scan then he may put the metho up 2.5mg!!!!  After metho there is nothing else for me to try ive been through them all.   I dont have a life at all and have not done since last November.  He is against a resection - although its only a matter of time so why make me suffer!!! Im at my wits ends!! my stomach is huge and Im not going to the loo - which is unusual as I go between 14 and 18 times a day.  What can I do!!!!!! he knows I want the operation but is dragging it out for as long as possible which I understand but I have no life and im getting more and more depressed by the day and there is nothing else for me to try now - any suggestions please

You probably could try and presuade them. I would advise you to think it through properly because you probably want to keep as much of your bowel as possible. Have you tried biological drugs like Humira? I have started it this week as I couldnt tolerate methotrexate

    Hi Wendy,

is the doctor you mention your GP or a gastroenterologist / specialist?

If he is not a specialist then ask to be referred to a specialist you need the MRI asap as if you have stopped poohing or are much slower then you may have a stricture which the MRI will show up.

You sound as if the pain has now dragged you right down and its no good being brave any longer...if like me you find it hard to challenge the doctor take someone with you, bawl your eyes out and tell them you have had enough!

I have just had MRI the stricture is now 20 cm long and I'm just finishing third round of steroids in one year...auto immune suppressants aza and mercaptapurine gave me bad side effects and affected liver function my IBD Dr has decided I will need the op but just wants me to try methotrexate first I am to take 8x 2:5 mg tabs one per week and folic acid the day after...trying to be positive but have doubts f doesn't work I shall be jumping up and down for operation!

I am very lucky though cos I am still able to eat, and am robust currently, but the pain and poohing get you down sometimes...

I hope you get the MRI quickly as they really need to see what's going on inside...keep hydrated. It may help move things through ..good luck

    Hi Wendy,

I think it is about what will give 'YOU' the best quality of life. Sugery works well with some people and vice versa. You could see what your DR.s reasoning is behind their views and hopefully they will listen to you as well. Understanding the way this is dragging you down should give them a better idea on how to better help you. I really hope all the best for you reaching a decision.....
