Can I request to stop methotrexate

Posted , 5 users are following.

I been on methotrexate for 2 years now. I have 20mg every week. I usually inject every Saturday night. So on the Sunday I feel very rough, and end up doing nothing . Saturday night I know I got to inject, just thinking about it makes me sick. I also inject Cimzia 200mg every 2 weeks. I seen my nurse last week she said the two combination work well, so it's better to carry on. I see my consultant next month. If I say I want to stop taking it, cause of how I feel. Will he let me?? Any thoughts pls.

    Hi

An Australian rheumatologist, Irwin Lim writes an RA blog, and coincidentally his most recent post might be of interest to you. My thoughts went back to it immediately.

Perhaps you can feel more confident in challenging that your ongoing mtx treatment should be reviewed. It's a short opinion.

(just trying not to trigger the poor moderator with a benign link in here).

    Regards

You don;t have to ask to stop.  As I understand it MTX does not need a taper down process, say as would blood pressure meds, or heart meds, you cannot just stop them.

I was having some really big probelms, night sweats, soaking the bed through, with MTX and or Arava, Dr said to me, just stop taking one and see what happens, your choice, so I stopped MTX first, I had to pick one. Nothing no changes in issues excpet minor lack of energy, may not have been related, then back on MTX and stppoed Arava, problem solved, within three days the night sweats stopped, but had a major flare of my arthiritis, I cannot win can I, back on arava, but I have found if I take it only every second day it suits me better, maybe worth a try splitting my tablets, even though they are small, down to 5mg, rather than 10mg dose. still working on side effects.
