Hey theyre.
As I asked in title, can iron supplement (syrup) cause black tongue? It doesn't always happen, but sometimes my tongue is getting black. And no matter I try to wash it away with water etc. it doesn't work? What causes this and how do I get rid of it

Hi Jenny,
Yes it can cause black tongue,
Liquid iron can also stain the teeth & of course all forms of oral iron can cause darker or black stools as not all the iron is absorbed by the body so a % is passed when going to the toilet. I used to find "Eucryl" smokers tooth powder & toothpaste helped remove the staining from my teeth, tongue & gums.

Thanks for your reply andrew, now that relaxed me out little bit.
Because I was searching for what liquid iron does to tongue; there weren't talking about straining tongue, and as I said, it is happening *rarerly* , not always. I was scared of whether if it's associated with my immune system etc.

No problem, by the way if you have a sore & swollen tongue also or have any mouth ulcers, these symptoms can be caused by anemia so don't worry, as long as you're actively trying to rectify the anemia you're doing the right thing.
