Can mental health cause physical illness?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Both my mental & physical health are rapidly declining.

I've been suffering from cold sweats, chronic stomach pain, dizziness, fatigue, flu symptoms, headaches etc for the past 2 weeks. I did go to the doctors & was told I have a viral infection.

It's worse at work because I despise my job & dread going in every single day.

I'm doing my best to find a new one & stop myself slipping back into a dark place but it's getting harder & harder each day.

I will be retuning to the doctors today as I can't continue feeling like this. I'm hoping to be signed off but with that comes the worry of not having enough money to live off etc.

Just feel like I'm living a nightmare & can't wake up

Hi. I feel exactly the same. I have a constant neck ache and tight band around my head and feel like I'm in a dream world. I'm convinced it's anxiety & depression I have suffered all my life. Are you on any medication? I'm on 100mg sertraline and after going through complete hell for the first few weeks I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I know it's not a magic cute but I can control my thoughts that are so so dark and concentra on CBT excercises without thinking "I don't need to do this, I'd rather be with friends" etc. Also there's a book called "The Happiness Trap" that has great excercises too. But I definitely need the meds.

      Hi Alan.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I'm not on any medication - I came of Fluoextine in November haven't been on anything since.

Maybe it is time to go back on something but I just feel it will be a massive step back & might make me feel worse if that makes sense.

I'm glad you have found something that works for you.

I will take a look at that book, thank you.

Yasmine, I am convinced mental health impacts our physical health, either in a positive or negative way. If your depression is severe enough to have a negative impact on your physical health, I suggest seeking treatment for the depression before you do something as drastic as quit your job. My worst depressive episode also occurred while I had a job that was simply horrible.

I am just fine with being on meds. The quality of my life is 1000 times better with the right antidepressant. Maybe rethink getting back on your meds so at least you are in a better place mentally/emotionally prior to making big decisions. Good luck yasmine. I hope things start looking up for you.

      Hi Alice,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I agree I think things are just too much at the moment & I need help getting back to a healthy physical & mental state.

I've been signed off work for a week so will speak to my doctor before I go back.

      Xx

Many of the contrindications, not all can be caused by depression, others possible viral ?

Did your GP give you any AD ?

No I do believe it is viral but the symptoms are worse when I'm stressed or feeling lower than usual.

I'm going back to my old doctor that dealt with my depression before hopefully he can put me back on them x

      Hello Yasmine

Do you feel the need to change your outlook and your job. If you are suffering your like viral systems it may be anxiety and depression that is making you feel worse, So a new job may make you feel better

Depression can cause quite a few problems many are attached to the condition such as absent mindedness, overweight, caused by some mediations lack of concentration and a you can suffer various health problems that can be aggrivated and made worse because of problems

There are problems and contraindications that effect the tummy lining and headaches are not uncommon.

Stress can be a problem and the heart can palpitate more and you will feel unwell when this happens, negative feelings can also form chest pains, that many of us suffer from when life is causing a stressful nvironment. If you are concerned see your GP, mine gives me heart tests to put my mid at rest.

Depression is different in most people so it is possible you could have some different problems than above, if concerned see your GP

Sometimes muscles can feel tight and painful, I get stiffness in the neck and eye stress where I have to walk away from what I am doing. The list can go on and on. We are really all different.

Sometimes I go into my own little world and people have to bring me back when people are talking to me, I seen to be switched off to those around me.
