Can Omeprazole lead to other medical conditions?

I have been taking Omeprazole since March 28th this year. Everything has been going really well until I started getting loose stools (yellowish colour) soon after.

In April I had a blood test done and it showed iron deficiency. I had another blood test done just over a week ago and now I have a low Folate level and a low normal B12 level.

I have had to do a stool sample to see if my levels have fallen due to malabsorption. I get severe pain on the left (under breast) which travels down my left side and around into my back.

Has anyone else experienced these symptoms with taking Omeprazole?

I've been on Omeprazole for 3 years now, and my doctor suggested I get my bloods checked for vitamin, mineral and nutrient levels as well as the usual tests, just as a precaution. The only thing I was lacking was Vitamin D, which is likely due to me suffering with Fibromyalgia and being mostly housebound and not getting out enough, plus having to rely on a very restrictive diet due to digestive issues. I've heard of people be on this medication for 10 - 20 years without complications.

I guess it's the same as with all medications, some people can tolerate them and some can't. You've heard a handful of negative comments from the millions that have taken Omeprazole in the past, so I thought I'd throw a more positive comment about this drug in the mix. Yes, it can cause all the complications that others have mentioned, but what it can do and what it will do are two totally different things.

It’s entirely your choice if your happy on it, but remember, you dont always see what these meds do until it’s too late. They were never designed to be taken for longer than 2 weeks, for the simple fact that they are dangerous. Surely changing your diet is the better option, people are becoming too reliant on meds!! I’d find it very hard to believe someone on PPI’s for 20 years, had no side effects!!. 🤔.

Thank you for your reply, Omeprazole gave me back a life when I started taking it (I was in constant pain and nauseous all the time) It took away all those symptoms but since it just feels like my body is going wrong (iron, folate and border B12) I just wish I knew what was causing my symptoms

I’ve tried every kind of diet change with no positive results, Omeprazole is the only thing that keeps my digestive symptoms to a minimum, I’d be in so much more pain and sickness without them, believe me, I tried it once and within a day I had to call an ambulance one night. I agree that they are only designed to be used in the short term, and I’d much prefer a life without medication, as I had 4 years ago, unfortunately that isn’t going to happen anytime in the near future.

As for people being on this medication for numerous years, I’ve done my research and read many forum discussions on exactly this topic, as I was concerned about long term use. I discovered there are people that have been on it for many years, and we are talking 14, 15 years and more. I’m pretty sure in America that Omeprazole is a drug available over the counter, if that’s the case then surely it can’t be that bad. As I said, we are not all the same and we all react differently to various things. A few months ago I was prescribed an antibiotic which I tolerated fine, yet the same antibiotic gave my sister severe diarrhoea and sickness. Upon reading reviews on this antibiotic, it was very conflicting, a lot were fine with it and a lot had bad reactions. Has anyone ever considered that it might not be the drug, but how our bodies deal with the drug, it’s a possibility surely? These forums can be a great help and reassurance to a lot of people, unfortunately with some subjects you’ll only ever hear horror stories, I was just adding my experience to add a positive note.

I’m glad you find the Omeprazole had helped you. I’m pretty much in the same boat as you Wendy. I was in terrible pain and sickness, and within a day of taking the drug, I started to feel so much better. I did try to wean off once, but I just went back to how I was and had to go straight back on them after a paramedic visit one night. The point we have to remember is that there was an obvious cause to our symptoms that led to us being put on Omeprazole, which even though has made us feel better, has also probably masked the real issue that we initially had. Yes the Omeprazole could be causing your iron, folate and B12 issues, but could it also be the initial cause of your symptoms before Omeprazole having an impact on them too? Some food for thought you might say, and certainly something I contemplate now and again.
