Can Predniso(lo)n trigger disease?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Just wondering: I received a corticosteroid via an infusion once (as far as I know) and took Prednisolon tablets just during 4 or 5 days. The next day after stopping I felt generally scared, confused and had a terribly bad concentration. Together with this I noticed a tingling in my left lower arm and leg, and at smaller locations elsewhere. Everything vanished slowly after a few days days apart from the tingling, which, together with a feeling of sleeping limbs and a slightly higher temperature in the evening (and maybe weight loss) comes back regularly, especially after exercising.

Side effects from stopping with Pred after just a few days seem to be rare (no doctor told me there might be problems), but I wonder if taking them for a short period might have started an outbreak of something that I had all along without previous problems?

so sorry to hear about this distressing experience you've had with this steroid. There do seem to be similiar accounts from others which you may be able to search for...

There do seem to be other people who've had a similiar experience to yourself. I am so sorry I can't remember where I saw the threads ...they were fairly recent however. One sticks in my mind. The person was determined to come off and I was full of admiration. Its worth searching back through the site perhaps using the alphabetical med search resource at the front of the site just above your name and the home page index. Or if not then looking thro topics. You could ask the moderator for assistance with this. In fact I'll do this for you and he will hopefully appear....magic!!!!!!!!!

This is such a heavy drug it worries me to think of anyone using it. However you did... and I am sure you'll be able to de-tox from it. May I recommend you search out a Naturopath ?

Good Luck and wishing you well. You have my very best wishes and thoughts xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'm sure I'm off it for quite a while already. It's just that the tingling didn't go away. I suspect (and I don't know if that's possible) that I had this health issue before but it didn't really appear because my immune system (or something) was holding it back. Only when Pred suppressed my imune system for a few days this problem actually got a chance to really give me troubles. Alternatively, maybe this is another aspect of what is the core reason for the 'asthma attack' in the first place - I never had asthma in my life and am absolutely fine again now. Or it's just all a coincidence.

I'm quite sure you're fine and can put this all behind you...it may be worth just checking in with the person who got off pred to re-assure yourself.

I would focus on taking steps to up your health. Anti oxidants can penetrate to the tissues and cells that may be struggling for whatever reason. Will let your research these. Do try to locate a Naturopath. You won't regret it.You get info to set you up for future good health. See it as an MOT. You don't have to have anything wrong. Just be pro-active think fabulous health and take the good sense steps.

I do hope Alan will come on when he has a mo...am sure you will be very appreciative if he can find that link..

      Hi Marey,

I can't find the discussion you mean specifically without a bit more detail, I'm good but not that good smile.

If it is a discussion you have posted in you can see all of the discussions you are in by going to https://patient.info/forums/me/discussions - maybe you will recognise the title? Or if you remember the user's name you can click on their profile and see what they have posted if they have made it viewable.

See http://patient.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/398389-how-do-i-find-and-or-link-to-posts-by-other-users for more on this.

      Regards,

      Ha ha

      You're good!

Set no limitations...mind reading is not beyond you either. Just love being able to summon you really!!!!!!! Any excuse.

I'm not big on gender differentiation but .......groan ....looking things up to do with computers is my idea of a slow death! Is this a male /female thing? I know Josephine agrees with me she was having just the same moan. You're such a whizz ....we can't understand you...us mere mortals!!

      tee hee

How about a video explanation? Perhaps volunteers from the site to assist you ....? by pretending to be inanimate parts of a computer....?

a state of normality for some people I know!!!!!!

I will have had a look at the instructions and have a go sometime when I need to send a link thank you....necessity and all that.

Meantime brain fog obstructs my mental clarity...so I will opt out ...but Yirara this is Alan, Alan Yirara.

Have a good look back Yirara through past posts to do with arthritis/bowel disease. Let us know how you get on! Thinking of you! Love marey x

I'm wondering why you are taking the steroids in an infusion.

I've not taken many over my life but from all my health readings and discussions they can be the best and worst drugs...

I've had a couple for knee and shoulder issues but none recently, they scare me.

Again I don't what your health issues are but I believe there are alternative remedies helpers for about everything that comes out way... J

    Thanks for your answers.

marey: you mean there were others with side effects upon stopping or others who got another disease as a present when stopping?

joy: I had a kind of asthma attack doctors could not get under control. Nebulizers worked, but only for a very short time and and as spray it didn't really work at first so they tried stronger things to at least give me a good night sleep. Afterwards they decided to put me on a short therapy with Pred, which also worked (once I got a bit better, the normal asthma stuff did work wonderfully). Actually, I didn't know what those pills were as it was just a blister pack in a brown bag and no information letter - and I wasn't feeling well enough to actually do the research then. Only when I felt so weird for the third day I coincidentally read somewhere of someone going through the same, and then I looked at the blister pack and found it it was the same medication.

Oh, the 'asthma' or whatever it was is completely gone again. I could do any sport if it wasn't for this tingling that somewhat scares me. I'm in a country where all government services are down this week (apart from ER of course), but I'll try to get an appointment with a neurologist next week. Got one in a private clinic, but only in December sad

I don't know which country you reside, do you have access to supplements? I'm in the U.S. and we have everything and more....

One good friend who is older was hit with asthma maybe 20 yrs ago and when I got to her about grape seed extract, gave her a book to read etc...and she got on it and is so improved...

You can google: Asthmatic issues and grape seed extract.

Grape Seed is my salvation for allergy/sinus issues I had for a lifetime until 1995 when I found this power antioxidant.....check into it and read about it. J

These are my experiences and I share them.
