One of your discs may finally have herniated. You may or may not want to go to A&E. It will eventually heal, but will probably take a lot of time. When you feel a bit better, look at back muscle strengthening exercises, eg. Pilates.  Can't help thinking though that  your physically demanding job as a chef with long shifts does not help at all, and may well have hurried matters along. But changing your job mid-life is much easier said than done.

Dear Leesburg, I can so sympathize with you, you have definitely got a ruptured spinal disc.  I have had  the same thing happen to me three times, one time I had a disc 4/5 rupture one side, then a day later it ruptured on the other side....I spent a week in hospital on morphine injections.

You really need to call  your doctor, one to get decent pain relief and two if you have lost any of your bladder control you need to be hospitalized.

On a good note..... it will honestly improve a lot, it will take time but it will heal.

Pamper yourself, keep nice and warm and comfortable, have a ho water bottle to help with the pain and make sure that you take any medication you are given.

Take care, and be kind to yourself,  DEIRDRE xxx

I am sorry about the spelling of your name at the top x

    Dear weesmurf,

I am so glad that you went to your local hospital to be diagnosed and to be prescribed morphine, you are probably taking oxytocin at the moment.

It is very important that you take the medication you are given and the whole dose.

When the (excruciating) pain is controlled you can relax more and avoid tension in your other muscles to compensate.

I promise you the pain will get better, obviously it takes a while but with medication and rest and a bit of spoiling and pampering it will get easier and easier.

Wear comfortable clothes, keep warm, watch a bit of television to take your mind of it, but you must try to move a little as well, as much as is comfortable for you, but no bending over!.

I truly hope that you start to feel a lot better very soon, my heart goes out to you...

very best and warmest wishes to you. Take care, Deidre xxx
