Can't fall back asleep after early A.M. visit to the loo

Does anyone have any ideas for getting back to a deep sleep after nightime wake up call to the loo?  I fall asleep fine but when I need to get up at say 3 am, (in the dark) and use the loo, when i return to the bed, sleep evades me.  I just lay there until the alarm goes off.  Can't keep doing this and expect to function normally.

Have you tried listening to music via earphones. It helps put me to sleep. A very gentle music channel or set replay on a fav song via electronics available.

Dear hope4cure. No I have not tired that yet and i really don't know if i could manage setting up all that (headphones, specific song) at 3 am.

I am so out of it when I get up at that hour of the morning, all i want to do is lay back down.  They say you shouldn't be thinking of too much stuff or having lights on in the hallway when you do have to get up.

      Thanks for your idea though.

I have my iPad set on night light, all I  do is set the time ahead and when I get up put on earphone in one ear & back to bed & auto set music comes on takes a few minutes to dose off.

      Timer turns off music auto.

I found its the only way, it keeps my mind from wandering on & on. May not be for everyone but I had tried everything. There are music sleep machines on the market may work for you better.

It is irritating when we can't get back to sleep. Then I'm groggy all day!

Mabe others here can give advice that would work for you.

I myself can not have any noise, light, etc.

I also have the same problem.  How about a light sleep aide at that time?

I take Melatonin before bed...and I get up every hour..but do drift back to sleep for an hour.

However, using the word "loo" I assume you are in the UK and they do not give Melatnonin over the counter.

So have you talked to a Dr. about this?  I was on another medication where I would take half for sleep and then 1/2 if I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep it was Trazadone.

BUT, I had a reaction to this medication because it interacted with other pills I take...so I am back to the Melatonin.

I understand the fear and frustration of not being able to fall back asleep.

      Hi Misssy2.

I have tried different sleep aids including ones with melatonin. Haven't found any luck yet with them. No I live in the U.S.  Just thoguht it would be fun to call the john something different, plus it seems this site is located in the UK, right?

I have seen a sleep doctor twice already and had two sleep apnea tests in my lifetime, I don't have sleep apnea they said and the sleep doctor did nothing but tell me things like go to bed the same time each night and don't do this and that. Worthless.  There must be some natural supplement out there that one can take that will knock you out until morning.

Seriously, when desperate...and since you live in USA.....get 10mg Melatonin...take it with Valerian root as long as Valerian doesn't mess with your other drugs...and you will sleep better.

?I have sleep problems worse than anyone I know...after a couple nights now...I really DO start to get tired with the Melatonin...no problem falling asleep now....and even after getting up 5x a night to use the loo...still nervous about it...and still struggle a little...but breathe slowly and eventually I see another hour had passed...and I must have slept.

Just as a reminder, I have no trouble falling asleep. It is when I have to get up after about 4 hrs. of sleep that I can't get back to sleep.

So instead of getting a good 6-7 hrs. of sleep, I only get those four.

I know...I struggle the same way...and did this morning as well....I just force myself to stay there...and close my eyes...breath slowly...which is difficult when I am panicking...but I did manage another hour this a.m.

And again, I do think the Melatonin helps with that.

You mean you just LIE there (not 'lay' there).

Really? You typed that?  Of course when one gets no sleep typing errors are the least of concern.

It's not a typing error, it's a grammar error. He did it twice. People lie on beds. Hens lay eggs. Sorry you don't appreciate the finer distinctions of the English language!
