Can't sleep in pain!

Was so happy today, therapist said I turned a corner and doing so well. I am 7 weeks post op and measured today at 110 on my own and 115 with help. In two days since last measurement went up 5 degrees. Tonight however in such throbbing pain! Finally couldn't take it any more and took a Vicodin which I only like to take before PT. It is so unbelievable how you can feel so good one minute and feel so lousy the next. So far the Vicodin is not even helping! Hope it kicks in soon! The ups and downs of this surgery can be so depressing. I'm sure there are a lot of you up right now in the middle of the night experiencing the same thing. Need some company, if up start typing!

That is SO true , the ups & downs. When I feel ok I do more exercise like climbing stairs more & walking then if / when I over do it I suffer unbearablely. Like I say it feels like one step forward & 2 back sometimes.

Still having up and down days 6 weeks 2 days post op. Sometimes it feels like it's never going to end. I used to think I had a high pain threshold but this has knocked me for six.

some days it's not so much of a pain but a very odd uncomfortable sensation but I guess that's down to having an alien in our bodies.

i can't wait to go and see my consultant on the 23rd to see if everything's ok and normal.

here's to us all having more good than bad days x

I feel pretty good during the day, even after I do exercises. However, nights are awful. I stopped trying to pretend that I can sleep without medication.I take oxycodone an hour before bed nd then I am relaxed and able to sleep for a few hours.  I am 12 weeks postoperative.   So, Dolores, take the meds if you need them.

    Best to you

I went to the doctor this morning to revise my medication, as mine didn't seem to help much. She's put me on co codamol & codeine at night, so I'm hoping for a better  sleep, please God. I think the body gets use to meds  when you're on for a long time. I seems to have been on a variety. Be glad when I can finished them altogether.

Oh did o need to read this. I'd been feeling pretty good at 3 weeks post op except for the dreaded knee Bend at pt. Then last night, pain in left side of knee that woke me up. Burst into tears, blubbered to my husband. He got me a pill, packed me on ice and it's better.

I was like someone else on this discussion thought I had a good attitude, high pain tolerance, etc but guess I'm human. I allowed myself to become immersed in self pity and I hate that emotion. I try to do a little talking to via Captain Picard "enough of this self indulgence ".

I just know it will get better.

    Hi Delores,

All normal but even at 13 wweks I take pain killers an hour before exercise and bedtime. Still get the occassional night of discomfort but it my consultant informed me that this wil be so for up to 12 months but gets easier. You could try non addictive sleeping pills or see your GP as sometimes  NSAID help too.

7 weeks is early days yet and that bend is great was still at 100 at that  point and has taken this long to get to 125 +.

As for pain after PT aboslutley so they can be brutal  but ice, elevate and rest but continue all your home exercises daily. I actully fine doing my last set of home exercises 2 hours before bedtime sometimes helps.

Chico on this forum on her has some good links to look at.

This op is a routine but major surgery  stick with it. this forum is useful with the ups and downs

    All the best

Relax, you will get there, but you gonna have to be patient for a few weeks yet.

once that unbelievable pain dies down to a simmer,it's time to enter the next stage of adjustment.

And this lasts for quite a while as well.

inch by inch the little snail will get there.

    good luck

Well went on for pt this morning and it was really worst. I felt discouraged and asked her what y rom bending was. She said 100 and said that was pretty good 3 weeks out. Don't worry she said. We want to work for more but you're doing ok. Home and icing now. One day at a time. We all seem to be doing ok.
