Can't Void After TURP

Posted , 9 users are following.

Had a TURP done about a month ago and still cannot void on my own. My doc says I have a lazy bladder and it will take time to return to normal. Has anyone had luck retraining their bladder using the clamping method?

Had TURP 2 moths ago on June 1st. Was discharged home with catheter which was discontinued on June 9th. No problems with urination after that. Recovered very quickly and am 100% satisfied.

I had another problem. Tissue samples after TURP was sent to pathology and come back positive for prostate Ca.

i am scheduled for prostate biopsy on August 11th.

If your biopsy shows the need for corrective action, ask your doc about proton therapy. Good Luck !!

No, but my best friend had it done this year. He was going to do the "seed" thing, but He chose to have Proton Therapy at Shands in Gainesville. He was there for 6 weeks for daily treatments. The good part is there was no surgery, the beam is focused just on the cancerous tissue, so there is no lasting side effects. He went back in 6 months, PSA was in the normal range. It's just a more up to date choice.

They use a "balloon" to hold your bladder out of the way,and after 6 weeks of treatment there was some discomfort for a day or two, but that was about it. The treatment passage way is thru the rectum, but the daily treatment took just minutes. He was worried about incontinence, etc, but that never happened.

Maybe you did not have to have a turp.  It was your bladderthat was the problem.  Did your doctor tell you about it before..Ken

I had some bladder stones removed about three moths ago, so my uro was aware of the enlarged prostate treating me with flomax etc. I went into renal failure because of the blockage and the turp was done My uro says the bladder was distended for a long time so it will take time. I don't know if the bladder has become weakened or is just slow to recover. In my case I'm at the mercy of my uro's knowledge and experience.

I am so sorry that you are going through this.  I still think it was all in the bladder.  I would never tell my urologist to cut away at my prostate.  I don't care if I am not having any kids now but i still enjoy the outcome.  I was in bladder retention about 6 months ago.  Was peeing bleed after a surgery because I was back on my blood thinners.  Was good for a week and then there was just blood.  Went to the hospital to have a catheter put in so they could flush me out.  Bladder spasm hurt like hell.  After a half hour I was still bleeding.  Had to have emergency surgery.  Not by my urologist..  I would not give my permission to the urologist to have the surgery until he signed a paper that he would leave my prostate in tac.  He was not to cut core or take out anything.  I was told that may happen   It turned out to be 3 blood clogs on my prostate and he had to cauterize them.  Had to have a 24 hour flush.  I could not wait to have them take out the catheter.  I think there are to many doctors that think a turp is the first way to go.  That is one thing I am not for.  There are to many less evasive procedure out there that you can have first.  Over the last few weeks I have read alot of complaints about the turp procedure.  Your doctors tell you that it will fix the problem but you end up with more problems and then they talk you into having it done again.  That is wrong.  Alot of the problem seam to be in the bladder and they should fix that first.  Not say it the prostate and cut away at it and when it not fix they go oh well I guess I was wrong.  Life is to short to have that happen to us.  I have a very good urologist his young and he thinks the same way I do.  He believes that a man should not give up one thing for another.  He is all ways in school learning new way to help men out.   Take care and I hope you get well soon..... Ken

My story is kind of unique. Before all this hapened I saw 3 doctors in a month's time. They were all routine check-ups. At my cardio, I complained about the swelling in my feet and legs, he put me on lasix. Next was my primary,I still had the swelling , he said give lasix more time. Next was my uro, had to wait 10 day to see him, he scanned my bladder said it wasnt draining good ,scheduled more tests. The day after I was rushed to the ER. They did blood work and found my creatinine was 7,9 and was in Renal Failure ,the kidney doc and my uro said I needed the TURP. Tey put a catheter in and in 3 days I lost 20 lbs in water weight. What angers me is that none of the three I saw took the time to find out why I had the swelling and the kidney doc said the lasix was just dumping uiirne into my body cause I could not drain it fast enough, therefore my body became toxic.Unlike you, my confidence in my docs has taken a hit, and now rely on my kidney doctor, who is honest about my bladder problem and the need to see if it can be retrained.... That's my sad tale......Good luck to you and I'm glad you and your uro are on the same page

I would like to know WHY you are so against TURP. Seems to me you have a down against this particular surgery which could cure all your symptoms but are happy to recommend or even endure other procedures without a higher success rate recorded. You knock it but you've not had it. I had my first TURP over twenty years ago and only now am I contemplating a second procedure. No such success rates on all the other procedures you advocate so freely on this site. If you've not tried it, don't knock it!

Well first all they would never do that to my prostate.  I am glad it worked for you 20 years ago.  But that was the only procedure that they had.  You were one of the lucky ones I quess if your happy with it.  But you have to have it again. So how good was it.   There are do many men on this site that I have read post over the last couple of week that wish they never had it done.  To many problem and side effects.  Some men can't have sex anymore and the ones that still can don't enjoy it so they stop all together.  Alot of the new procedure don't have the retro which men don't want to deal with.  I had it with a couple of the pills that I was on a few years ago.  Getting it up was no problem but the orgasm was nothing it was flat.  I hated it.  At 61 my 38 year old girlfriend and I side have fun and we both enjoy the clean up.  I don't care if I'm not having any more kids but I still enjoy being able to ejaculate.  There more intense and after I had my uro-life there better they when I was younger. Peter this is my opinion and a men will pick whatever procedure they feel they can deal with But I hope there doctor give them all the information the can to make the right pick.  I have many friend that think the same way.  There not having anything taking away from them at this pointe in there life just to pee a little better.  I have a friend that is 67 he has bladder cancer and the doctor told him that he may have to have his bladder taking out.  When he was told that they would remove his prostate he told them to go to hell.  He say I guess this is it.  I will stay the way I am.  There is a new procedure that is just going into trail it's called I-Tind.  It looks good and there are no side effects and it has been working well.  Life is to short to take away anything.  I hope this new turp works will for you.  Take care and God Bless  Ken

Totaly agree with you. Just had my TURP on June 1st and so far everything is great. I hope mine will last long as yours. No problems of any kind after surgery and my sex life is excellent and with a lot of satisfaction for both my wife and I. RE does not bother us at all. Orgasam is as good as it was before and lost way longer than before. I am totaly satisfied with TURP and that is the only procedure which can solve BPH problems. Everything else is just BANDAIDE. Millions of proven records worldwide are proving that as many happy man worldwide. People on this forum just hate TURP and that is why they are trushing about it.

The only way there are millions of men that had the turp procedures is because that was the only thing they had 50 years ago.  In the last 10 years they have been coming up with new procedures because men are not happy with have there prostate cut out and not having a sex life.  You men were lucky you can still have sex.  There are many men that have had the procedure that can't have sex and now they wish they never had the procedure.  We all have to pick what we will deal with.  You picked a turp for you and I pick the uro-lift for me.  Your happy with your pic and I'm happy with mine..  It is not like it was before we have a choice.  It's not.  This is the all I can give you take it or leave it.  Also as you know all men are diffrent.  What may work for you may not work for me and that goes the other way to.  And I would take the bandaide any day over having my prostate distroyed.  Have a good day  Ken
