Can you be born with SUI?

Ever since I can remember I have had problems controlling my bladder. If I laugh really hard and uncontrollably, I often completely wet my pants. I have avoided activities such as theme parks because I often lose control of my bladder on the rides. I am so embarrassed as I am now an adult an although it does not happen as often, it has happened. I also sometimes have minor leaks when I have a big cough or sneeze. When looking at many of the articles on causes, it seems this occurs from certain events such as childbirth or surgeries among other things. I have never experienced any of those things so I am wondering if it is possible that I was born with some kind of congenital defect that has caused this and if so, how can it be fixed?

Hello katie. You could well have been born with a congenital abnormality but unless you ask your GP for a referral to a urologist you'll never find out. If there's anything untoward chances are it can be fixed so rather than having this probably for the rest of your life see your doctor.

Thanks for the response! So I actually have seen a urologist in the past because I used to get recurrent UTI's and they did run some tests to make sure I didn't have reflux which it it showed I didn't. So do you happen to know if they have other tests to run that would tell me if I do in fact have SUI or would they have been able to tell then?

I can't remember exactly what they were but I remember one they put a catheter into my bladder to fill it and then after I emptied it they did imaging to see if it emptied entirely. I think the other tests were with my urine.

Hello Katie, I can exactely relate to you. I have had always problems with my bladder and physicians found nothing wrong, only weak bladder. I've leaks when laugh or have cough and sneeze and sometime I lose bladder control. Someone told me probably losing control depends on a mix of causes, weakness, how fast bladder become full, irritations, anxiety,... when these are in disadvantage all togheter suddenly I've strong urgency to pee and I cannot hold it for more than few minutes. So it seems there is not just one thing to cure for me, all I can do is take in control the mix causes but it can't assure no accidents and this upset me a lot. Having to wear big protections everytime I go out helps and bothers me at the same time. Anyway, I think you should just go to urologist for other tests and try some drugs, sometime these solve or helps about leakages.

Thank you! Even though it is not a situation I wish upon anyone, it is somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one! I think I will just find out if there is something else I can try from the Urologist. It doesn't hurt to ask!
