Can you get still an ulcer when taking a PPI ?

I have a long history of indigestion, two duodenal ulcers, GERD and a hiatal hernia. I have been on various PPI's since 2000. Despite the PPI's my indigestion and stomach problems have been much worse in the past year although in the main the PPP's stop the burning acid feeling.
Being in Atrial Fibrillation since January of last year I resisted the advice to take Warfarin to prevent blood clots in case of it being an ulcer and having a bleed and so I could not have the ablation I need. My stomach seemed a bit better at the start of the year so I started Warfarin in February. The only other medication I take is Losartan for my BP.
In the past two weeks I have felt nauseous with stomach pain that starts on waking and in the early hours. Gaviscon does not help but is mostly relieved after eating.
So the question is can you get an ulcer when taking a PPI?

Breath tests are more accurate than stool tests, easier to administer, and don't require quite as much Lab work as stool tests. For those reasons stool tests are rarely done these days. But both tests are far more accurate than blood tests.
The other main reason for stomach ulcers (though there are others) is prolonged use of NSAID pain relievers such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin etc. I take it you have not needed such Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatories?

Hi Dereck, I really feel for you, I too have suffered from over acid production for the past few years, having long periods of just managed it to weeks and weeks of pain and misery, horrible. My answer to your queston about PPI's and ulcers is that I do believe that you can develop an ulcer on PPI's, I have been in agony for the past weeks and my dr believes I have ulcers., I am now on both Renitidine and Omoperole but interestingly I recently started taking a BP tablet for high BP and I do think my acid situation has got worse. I really don't know what to do,my dr is adamant that this is not the case and that I just need to keep taking the high level of PPI's although I am concerned about the long term effects of the drugs. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I have certainly been taking PPI's for too long.
I am also taking BP meds and Warfarin.
