Can you need a THR with just moderate discomfort

Hi everyone,

I am making this enquiry on behalf of my life long school friend, with whom, yesterday I had lunch .

During the early part of last year, after experiencing a dull ache in her groin , her GP sent her for an X Ray. This revealed that she had advanced OA and required a total hip replacement . At this time, I was struggling with inexorable pain and having to limit my activities . She , on the other hand, was still able to walk long distances; dance and wear high heels . Clearly she made a comparison and decided against surgery. One year later and , for her, nothing has changed. All I can advise is for her to have a further X Ray and a second opinion . She is terrified that her OA will suddenly worsen and, like me, she would be unable to function. She cares for her elderly mother .

I said I would ask my fellow hippies.

"Is it possible to have little to no discomfort with advanced OA that requires THR"?

Many thanks

Morrie

    Hi Morrie,

The decision is ultimately hers, of course -

This is my story - At some point (due to pain in groin) x-ray showed I had advanced OA in right hip - I was in shock and in denial about and continued to do everything as usual - then started to "hide" it - joking about getting old -

pain was getting worse but bearable - GP send me for another x-ray, no more cartilage , bone on bone and he said : You should be in more pain !!! I pretended I wasn't ---- Until it was so bad that I cried myself to sleep ---

I am pretty sure that if I had this forum I would not have waited that long -

I would suggest to her to get the ball rolling - it will NOT get better and the fitter she is now, the better her recovery will be -

decline can happen so quickly !!! my left hip went from mild to bone-on-bobe within 6 months -

    Big warm hug

      Thanks Renee

I know exactly where you are coming from and more or less "ditto".

We meet up, along with three other school friends , once a month,

and I am seeing her again in a couple of weeks. Shall show her these posts and hope, just for once, that she starts to take care of herself.

      Many thanks

I also had bone on bone with no symptons at all. Then I was involved in a car accident where someone hit me from behind with great force. Within 4 weeks the pain started and got progressively worse over a 2 year period eventually leading to handicap. My doctor told me that the accident did someting causing such pain. He said that although it was bone on bone he would never have operated unless that pain had come.

      Hi Cindy,

Bone on bone with no pain at all? My goodness, that is quite remarkable.

      Thank you for your comment.
