Can you reverse early stage CKD

Posted , 3 users are following.

My father has severe CKD as per my other thread. I'm nearly 50 and have a lower than normal GFR myself of 86. I am overweight and don't eat that well- the wrong things . Can I improve this now or is it a case of not letting it get much worse that quickly?

A GFR of 86 is excellent, a kidney specialist will not see you unless it drops below 60 and quite often will not offer treatment unless you are either unwell from kidney disease or your GFR drops to 30 or below. You have nothing to worry about.

    Hi,

A lot of people on here would love a GFR of 86.  You GFR naturally drops as you age and as you are 50 this will not be of concern to any Dr or neph.  A GFR is also only a best guess and can be effected by many things.  A GFR of 60 or above is considered normal.  You have mentioned that you know you are over weight and don't eat well so I would suggest very kindly if you know these things then you are able to take steps to change them before they do cause you damage.  There is risk of stroke and heart attack not to mention diabeties.  You don't need to cut everything out you enjoy just eat it in moderation and watch your portion size and start to eat things that are better for you.  Also take some exercise you don't need to run a marathon start by walking and build it up to 30 minutes each day, or find a local yoga group to join all of these things will help you.  So in answer to your question you can prevent further damage by addressing your issues you have written about, but this is up to you no one can make you do it or do it for you, you have to ask yourself do you want to end up on dialysis years down the line or do you want to change your lifestyle now and help yourself.  If I come across as being a bit harsh I don't mean to but I have been through dialysis and transplant (there was nothing I could do about it) but if I would of had the chance like you to change things then I would have.  Good luck.
