Cancer diagnosis

A family member went into hospital with anaemia. After 3 days and a few tests he was apparently told he had cancer by a doctor doing the rounds. He's out of hospital now and has an apt for further blood tests and an appointment with a consultant next week. He's a bit of a drama queen and while I feel it's possible he might have cancer, would a doctor doing the rounds give him this information? Due to covid, no one else was present. My gut feeling is, that maybe he misunderstood, and the doctor actually said they were not ruling out cancer? Any thoughts please? Thank you.
