Candesartan side effects

I've been taking this drug for a month and am experiencing a lot of pain in knee joints, is there anyone else who has experienced a similar (although uncommon) side effect?

I have been on this drug for some years and in the last few months have had the dosage doubled to 16mg per day. Joint pain in knees and radiating down and up the leg into the foot with muscle pain also an issue. Local GP does not believe the canasartan has anything to I do with my condition. Yet an x Ray, ultra sound , and MRI scan are all inconclusive when set against the totality of my symptoms .

I suggest you also have the scans I have had and if the same result occurs we need to progress the debate and question the use of this drug.

All ACE inhibiters, such as Lisinopril, and ARBs, such as candesartan, have given me chronic hip pain and some knee pain (eventally causing loss of sleep because of the pain).  At one stage I couldn't walk more than 100yds without having to sit and relax.  I was taking these for 17 years and the only way I could get rid of the pain was to stop taking them!  I now take a combination of Angitil and Adalat (both Calcium blockers), which give me good results with 'least worst' side effects.  In addition, over time the Lisinopril and Losartan (another ARB) both created chronic chest congestion which was painful and debilitating and once again cleared when I stopped taking the medication.

thank you for your reply. It is a relief to know that you are not the only one experiencing these symptons. I have the knee & leg pain with loss of sleep and my general mobility is also now effected. I am hoping to see my doctor in the next few days as  nearly sleepless nights are wearing me down. Your reply has given me confidence to "push" things along. I have requested xrays but may have to wait a month!

Mike's comments are very interesting and fly in the face of  my local GP who is somewhat distainful of the suggestion that these drugs could be responsible for my knee and muscle pain. In the light of Mike' s comments I think a revisit is on the cards!

Does anyone have any more experience of this example, the more evidence the better!

I'm thankful that this drug, combined with Amlodepine has brought my BP down.

After a couple of years it became clear to me that it does affect muscles, bowel movements, sleep pattern as well as working the kidneys quite hard. Having a good GP who listened and believed me was great. My candesartan was dose was halved to 8mgs daily and lots of excercise helps!

My GP arranged an X-RAY of my hip 3 years ago.  There are signs of early arthritis.  I asked whether I would need a hip replacement soon and he said that would not be necessary for a long time yet, if at all.  The Lisinopril (and subsequently Losartan) must aggravate the effect of the weakened joint.  However, when I stopped taking them the pain disappeared!  My current regime is apparently not approved in the UK but so far it's working well for me.  The hospital specialist who my GP sent me to said they are most successful when their patients take some control and he's happy for me to continue!

Your comments were helpful (and I appreciated all the replies). After 3 nearly 3 sleepless nights with knee & leg pain I decided to leave off the candesartan for a few days to see if the problem would improve. I had a word with a doctor at my surgery  who wasn't happy at all to hear this& said they couldn't stop me but it was a serious step to take as I laying myself open to high risk of stroke etc. I was offered stronger painkillers for the pain & it was made clear that they thought candesartan wasn't the culprit.  However, to me that wasn't satisfactory,  masking the pain isn't the answer, establishing the cause must be the first step surely. I did feel like a nuisance patient and a bit nervous about leaving off the drug - nothing is worse apparently than refusing proper medical advice. I am now on the second day without candesartan and the pain in my knees does seem to have abated. However, we shall see! I have an appointment with the clinician next week for a review & BP check.

      Hi Andrew

Are you still on candesartan? I hope you are feeling better. I have left off my candesartan 8mg. Pains in knees etc are much eased. I am taking my BP at home & so far it has been acceptable (high normal). I am starting to wonder if the side effects of putting these strong chemicals in our bodies outweighs what we are told are is less risk of stroke & heart disease.

Thanks for your kind reply jill. Have been to docs today and more or less told her that i was fed up with these pills and they have put me back on Amlodipine as i was on them ages ago without too bad side effects. I also totally agree with you regarding chemicals in your system!
