Cannot tolerate statins, help please!

In the space of six weeks I have been put on two different types of statins. The first ones Atoravastin, made my joints ache and I already suffer from osteoarthritis. I was then put on another type and my face swelled and I could not pass urine well. The doctor said to go back to the Atoravastin but the chemical levels in my liver was high, the reason that I was taken off them in the first place. The doc said that it was ok! I have not taken any for a week now and I am just getting back to being able to walk! I am very confused and worried as my cholesterol is high. Having said this, I DO know why my levels are high, tis because I have not looked after myself for over a year due to having a lot of stress and eating rubbish. I am trying to look after myself now but I am very worried about the whole affair. I am 7 on the cholesterol scale  sad

I just want to take this opportunity to thank each and every person that has replied to my post, I did NOT expect so many ppl to reply and so many ppl give me such good advice. I want to give big well wishes to all the ppl that are suffering or have suffered due to having similar probs with the statin, as me. I am still recovering and I wasn't on them long. I have not been back to my doctor yet because I feel that he/she will only make me feel more worried and pressured. The nurse, the doctor, are really pushing the tabs on to me and no one is actually listening to me! I am not taking them and I am going to sort myself out. I need to get rid of the stress of the last two years and look after myself. I will not bore you with the horror story of the last two years and ongoing probs but I want to say again THANKYOU ALL XX

Good luck Elaine, I really hope you stick to your guns.  Coincidentally I was chatting to a casual aquaintance I see when I go swimming who seemed a little stressed today and she explained she'd had a flaring argument with her GP this morning on just this subject.  Her GP said "at your age I think we need to get you on statins".  She is overweight but her cholesterol is only very slightly raised and she has no diabetes or high blood pressure.  My acquaintance refused politely and the GP went into over drive in disgust apparently.  Not once did her GP bother to mention that statins can adversely affect liver function and if you're already overweight this risk is increased because  you will have a fatty or enlarged liver.  Her cholesterol apparently was only 1 or 2 points above 'normal' (this being the NEW lower normal pushed on us by the drug manufacturers by the way!).  Luckly she continued to refuse and risked being 'persona non grata' at her surgery but she said there was absolutely no way she'd consider statins - good for her!

Statins affecting liver function particularly in overweight people is a new one on me and yet another reason why I'm glad I don't take them any more.

I had all the other adverse effects:  extreme fatigue, deep depression, nerve & muscle pain and non-functioning libido.

Hi WEEK 6 of my diary just been to cardio doctor on my 5 months of hell check up  told him that i had stopped the stastins 6 weeks ago he went nutsfrown until i told him that i was sleeping better no more aches and NO pains No  nightmares he also STOPPED  the dreaded Bisiprol which was giving severe pins and needles in left foot and hand and in other areas  tingling feelings he suggested  Ramipril or Losaratan or Ezetimibe but side effects  is the  trots and a bad rash  he also said my blood was slightly up but cholestral was down from 7,4  to 6,3  told him straight that it was ruining my life with the aches and side effects.

.He shook my hand and said there is other NEW drugs on the market which are on trials and are better than statins and in 5 years these will be available but would say no more... just told me to carry on with asprin and clidiprol for 6 months..i class that as a big result from a very good understanding  cardio doctorcheesygrin

I was prescribed Simvastatin for high cholesterol  (but with a  4.8 ratio). With my insurance it was free. Because of an accident 15 years ago, I take constant memory tests. Simvastatin caused  memory problems for the 7 months that I took it, and lasted for a month after I stopped it.
