Car accident

I was in a pretty bad car accident on July 4th. I was driving on a windy road and when I can around the corner two cars were stopped and I couldn’t stop. I slammed on the brakes and skidded while making a split decision of what to do. I ultimately turned the wheel slightly to the left and the front passenger side of my car hit the back drivers side of his truck. I realized quite quickly something was wrong with my ankle, had a strong feeling that it was broken. I  was lucky as there was an ambulance going by that stopped and helped me. It was an amazing young EMT who tried calming me down and proceeded to take my vitals and then ice and stabilize my injured ankle. I was then taken by another ambulance to the hospital where I was  given X-rays, which came back inconclusive. The ER Dr then ordered a cat scan that showed I had Shattered the bottom of my talus bone. He wrapped me with cotton applied a splint and ace bandages and sent me home with a referral for an orthopedic surgeon. That was a Wednesday I saw the surgeon on Friday morning. I was still quite swollen so he wrapped me back up and said he wanted to consult with another Otho Dr who was more familiar with foot injuries. They would then decide if I needed surgery or if a cast would be sufficient and told me to come back in a week. Over the next days I started experiencing horrible pain in my heel and thought maybe it was just nerve pain from the injury. It got so bad I would take the ace wraps and splint off and sleep with bags of frozen peas wrapped in a pillow case around my ankle. It became the only way I could sleep. Finally the day of my appointment arrived and when they called me back the MA escorted me to the casting room. I was so relieved this meant no surgery. I informed her of the heel pain I was having and asked what it could be. She then said we’ll you did fracture your heel. This is something the ER doc clearly failed to inform me. Although irritated by not being informed, it did explain the pain I had been having. The Dr came in and wrapped me in my hot pink cast, and sent me on my way stating he’ll see me in 4 weeks to do another X-ray to make sure I’m healing properly. It’s been 5 days today since I received my cast. Yesterday I had a fall off my knee scooter and out of instinct I placed my casted foot on the floor to balance my fall. I felt instant pain. To make things worse a little while later as I was going out my front door, my impatient pit bull shoved me out of the way and I again lost my balance and I put my casted foot down to balance myself. I have had pain ever since. I have taken 2 pain pills today. However I can’t seem to find a comfortable position and it hurts when I move around. As my Dr is about 45 minutes to an hour away, and I can’t drive I’m avoiding calling. My question is this, could I have done more damage to my ankle/heel or maybe just jiggled enough that the pain came back. The pain is in the top part of my foot where it meets my leg and the inner ankle. No matter what I do the pain is not going away. If anyone has any advice or ideas I’m willing to listen. Thank you in advance!!

    Hi Kristina,

    Poor you!

If I wear you I would get it checked out even if it is just for your own peace of mind.

I have an external fixator fitted to my lower leg and I fell putting my non weight bearing foot fully on the floor. Initially ok but over a couple of days pain got worse and worse. Worry kicked in and ended up not sleeping one night in tears with pain and worry. Went back to A & E and had another X-Ray. Luckily all was ok and just getting the all clear made a huge difference with dealing with the pain. I was also told to up my pain relief.

I hope all goes well for you and there’s no further damage x

Since it’s still so early I would probably get it checked if it were me. I fell twice and had to put my non weight bearing foot down. It hurt so bad but I was also much closer to getting switched to a boot when my falls happened. The first one was only a week before and the second was 3 days before so luckily I was ok. I do remember that for about the first two weeks I had constant pain anyway. The third week it mostly went away unless my cast got bumped. But since your break hasn’t had much chance to heal yet I would get it checked out to make sure nothing shifted that would now require surgery.
