Hi everyone,

I would like to know if anybody has been charged a higher premium since telling your insurers of your hip replacement? I have a full no claims discount , a clean licence, and a california state drivers licence, and I have been driving for 46 years!! and I have heard of peoples premiums doubling after they say about their THR,

thanks for any advice,

lynne.

I don't know about he car insurance but your comment rang a little bell for me on a different issue. You said that you did not have anly leg swelling, am I remembering right?

I don't know from which side of the Pond you are - I think a lot of posts come from the USA.    Here in the UK it should make no difference to your premium so long as your orthopaedic consultant agrees you are OK to drive.   If your hip replacement is on the left, and you drive an automatic, that leg is redundant anyway!   I had both done at different times and I was driving 6 weeks after each hip, with no premium increase.   Why should there be?  if your leg walks, your leg can press a pedal!

This continues my observation then that there is some type of procedure they do in the UK during a THR that causes so many of them to have swelling after surgery whereas I didn't have any swelling at all having it done in France. You had yours done in the United States and you didn't have any swelling either. One thing is the surgeries in the UK go much much faster than the surgeries in France. I was in for 4 hours and in the UK it seems like they get the whole thing done in 2 hours.

    Hi Lynne -

I don't know - that would mean that anybody who had surgery has to pay double premium ...

Better to ask - do you have to put it on your record though?

Let us know okay - interested in the outcome

    Hi Lynne

thats curious, it would never occur to me to tell my insurers.  I'm not trying to be devious just that I don't understand why I would tell them if I've had an operation that's made me better than I was before and my consultant has given me the all clear?

Is it required to give them all your medical history and did you have to tell them when you were impaired before your op?

I'll ask my cousin in California.  He's diabetic so guess the same might apply.

      Hi Laura,

Greetings.....well it never occurred to me to ask them/ tell insurers either - my physio said leave driving for 6 weeks: I ddi for six weeks and one hour!

A similar discussion her prompted my to phone my UK insurers, and they were soooo uninterested it almost wasn't real.

Maybe safe than sorry - but that was my response.

Have a lovely day, despite the clouds and probable rain!

      Thanks Mic

      Thats reassuring 😀

Skies are blue here in the Midlands. I'd best get my walk in before the next set of clouds.

    Morning all,

well I thank you all for your replies, I haven't told them yet, but according to most websites you are supposed to inform your insurers because any change in your circumstances since the policy was written that are not declared can make it void, however in CA, as long as your eyesights good, and you can merge on a freeway it all seems good, as many cars there are uto, I have 2 bionic hips, and I take mic's point , I'm better now than I was 10 months ago, so I'll give it some more thought, maybe have a word with my cousin who's a magistrate , hope you are all enjoyng the sunshine,

    Love

    Hi Lynne,

    Envy you your sunshine!

So, good luck in your decision making - it seems sensible to try a quick phone call given some comments on here, but really they couldnt have been bothered if I had driven the day after the operation !

No doubt others will tell a different story.....

Are you going to swim in the sea later today?!

    Hi Lynn,

Not really sure what the purpose of telling your auto insurance about your hip replacement would be. I live in NC and that never even entered my mind. I started driving three weeks post surgery. Once the swelling went down and I could put my shoe on again. I do however have an automatic and my surgery was on my left side.
